What Happens When You Workout High?


Chances are that you know someone that smokes…
weed from time to time. And seeing that this channel’s age demographic
is pretty much in line with the age of people that smokes the most weed, you probably smoke
a bit as well. And wouldn’t be surprised if you’re high
right now. But what happens when you mix a little bit
of that THC with your workouts? What happens when you work out high? For those of you that don’t know much about
marijuana, the most important substance in it is tetrahydrocannabinol, aka THC. THC has a huge effect in one system of the
body known as the endocannabinoid system. In fact, your body produces its own THC-like
substances known as, well, endocannabinoids. When endocannabinoids or THC binds to cannabinoid
receptors, primarily in the brain, it causes all types of fascinating effects that pot
users are familiar with. Now the question is whether any of these effects
can help with your workouts. First, let’s make it clear that even though
it’s more widely accepted today, smoking marijuana is still illegal in most states
and many countries. Because of that, this channel does not condone
the use of marijuana. Goal of this video is to look at what we know
about marijuana and how it can help or hurt your gainz at the gym. Whether you choose to use marijuana or any
other THC-inducing drug is solely your choice. Now, let’s face it. Most people’s image of a marijuana user
is not what we would call “physically active.” The cliché “lazy couch dwelling pot smoker”
almost makes it seem like smoking weed will do absolutely nothing in terms of fitness. But many athletes say otherwise. Some triathletes have said that consuming
THC-laced edibles were able to help them focus better in physical activities. Some athletes say that getting high allowed
them to take away anxiety during workouts. Marathon runners have said that smoking weed
before a run allowed them to get into a groove easier, and it makes it feel like they can
run for much longer. So the anecdotes of professional athletes
seem to give a thumbs up to bongs up. But what about actual research? Well, the thing is, not too many research
is out there since marijuana and THC is still classified as a “Schedule 1” illegal substance. But we do have some research and the information
is quite interesting. First is the connection of marijuana and the
good feeling after a long jog known as the “runner’s high.” It was long believed that runner’s high
came from the release of beta-endorphins. But now studies say that’s not true since
endorphins can’t reach the brain. Instead it’s most likely from endocannabinoids,
which can reach the brain. Since marijuana’s THC share the same effects
as endocannbinoids, it can be possible to increase the sensation of a runner’s high
if you smoked a bit before you run. Not exactly improving performance, but at
least improve the enjoyment of exercise. As far as improving performance, unfortunately,
it seems that all studies are pointing at zero. In terms of power output, studies have found
that, when performing a cycling test at maximal effort, smoking marijuana caused subjects
to exhaust faster. Another study showed a placebo beat out marijuana
in an endurance test. They even found that the smokers routinely
had an elevated heart rate and blood pressure. This can be discomforting and problematic
for people at risk for coronary heart disease. And even though yes, smoking marijuana can
reduce stress and pain sensations, which can even help you push through a few more reps,
this can pose as a huge risk. Since many of the early indicators of injury
from physical activity is discomfort and joint pain, smokers might not be able to timely
identify pain-injury signals before it’s too late. And THC is also a psychoactive drug that can
impair coordination and slow down reaction time. A study found that smoking 17mg of THC caused
users to run into walls more frequently and took longer to complete a virtual maze test. A caveat, though, is that people smoking only
13 milligrams of THC did as well as non-smokers. On top of this, another study showed that
if smokers were given a chance to practice, they were able to perform just as well as
non-smokers in a reaction test. So if you do choose to workout high, perhaps
smoke just a little bit and make sure you get enough warmup practice before you go heavy. And one more possible positive, but not fully
proven, is that marijuana can serve as vasodilator. This means that it can improve blood flow
by widening your arteries, which can help with delivering nutrients to your muscles
and vasodilation has shown to even improve soreness. A small win for grass city. Now putting everything in perspective, it
doesn’t seem like working out high is that great of an idea. There’s just no proven performance benefits
and it might even make it worse. But if taking a few puffs will help you with

  2. I lifted high for a year. It would make me skip legs every once in a while. Now I don’t lift high at all. My program has me squatting or deadlifting every workout. Would not recommend doing either of those exercises high

  3. Wouldn’t the risk of fucking an exercise up and potentially risk injury? Kinda how you’d not want to operate heavy machinery while high.

  4. I smoke weed before going to school, i also rip off my 2 dab pens in school bathrooms. I go to weight training 2nd period class to weightlift

  5. I always get high and then workout and never once have I ever had a problem just makes me feel better and allows me to workout out longer but I kno my limits but everyone should do what I do

  7. I went to the gym high one day. Did back and shoulders and the mind to muscle connection was great and I felt super concentrated on my workout over all. Bad news is I hurt my shoulder and was out for 2 weeks. Now I just stick to smoking right after my postworkout meal in order to get down the next one.

  8. Ive been an avid runner for about 6 years now. I cant remember the last time I ran without using some cannabis first. It gives me a rush of energy, helps distract from the monotony, and helps alleviate the initial physical discomfort. I use it before I lift now, too. The only downside I have noticed is when smoking it. As a runner, the last thing I need is lung constriction. It does go away as I run, but I do worry about the long term affects. Is anyone else a stoner runner with some insight?

  9. I don't run while high or really do cardio while high but I'll do weights and anaerobic exercises while high. I will also add I don't max out high. I might be high but I ain't crazy. Lol

  10. I don't have a drug dealer right now so I only smoke with my cousin and I like being active when Im high because it helps you focus and its more fun, but my cousin is a couch potato when he smokes and only likes to watch stoner movies instead of working out

  11. The biggest thing, by far, that cannabis is great for when working out, is prevention of nausea. Anybody that lifts really heavy or does HIIT knows these activities can leave you so nauseated you are likely to puke sometimes.

  12. But what about working out after the high? I find that working out after the high has worn off has improved my performance at the gym. My runners high kicks in way earlier and overall gym experienced is more enjoyable. I could never workout while peaking the high. It is after the high that I experience the change.

  14. If I smoke an indica, was high all day, or am bloated from munching, chances are I’m not likely to be active. Although.. when I get that perfect high I have all of the workout motivation ever! It takes away the discomfort of heavier weights/longer sets. When I run I can go much longer as well so it seems that (for me at least) it helps with the discomfort of muscle strain. I’d be careful if you’re not as comfortable with your high self and avoid more dangerous lifts until you’re confident that you can do them under the influence though.

  17. 3:55 thank you. I smoke just a little bit, and it makes it easier. At least for me. Now when they refer to people smoking and not getting shit done, I believe they are smoking more than they should for the task at hand but idk. I just know if I smoke a little bit , I can get alot done and the high lingers. 4 hours of working out high goes by easy and smooth.

  18. I don’t recommend smoking before exercising. Smoking pot stresses your lungs and can restrict blood flow to the brain. Your lungs and body need to be at peak performance while working-out. Edibles would be a better option

I had dinner with someone who has smoked weed since they were 14 everyday (at the end of the day when home) and they're 67, healthy and own multiple properties in the USA one of which is one marthas vineyard and worth 8.8 million dollars. If you workout high, just do low reps and don't use THC until you're a zombie, find and know your limits before training high and when you do, do it with light weight and focus on the muscle more.

  22. When i go heavy while working out, I'm miserable, but going light while stoned is freaking amazing for me, atleast when I do bicep curls. I havnt done my back or chest ect, light while stoned.

  23. I had a great workout after weed once. I had time to 1/2 sober up and then hit the gym. I felt like I could perceive muscle pain differently and feel more confident with my pain vs. burn threshold. Thanks Mary Jane!

  24. I find my stamina is through the roof and I often build better muscle patterns and routines while stoned that allow many more reps

  25. well you have to drink more water and eat around 15 percent more fat or high energy substance if you consistely use THC but it argueable increases preformance over decreasing of when nutrients are done properly the majority of the time

  29. I smoke like a chimney and exercise like Rocky almost everyday. Just gotta have the right mindset and maybe some of the good, good genetics.

  30. what we need is studies performed on trained athletes… I suspect that many of these studies are performed on people that fit the "typical stoner" stereotype.

    With my personal experience with using marijuana in sports, it seems to lower the RPE( rated perceived exertion).

  31. At my old gym there were two guys that came in high all the time… You could smell it and their eyes were red AF. These two guys were absolutely dialled in every time and pushing some serious weight.
