Valhalla the iconic Banzai Pipeline this is the Volcom Pipe Pro and you are watching the Red Bull Signature Series Aloha everyone Sal Masekela here your host of the Red Bull Signature Series and allow simply pipe we have a hundred and forty-four of the world’s best surfers that are here to compete and during its eight-year run there have only been four winners of this event our current world champion John John Florence holds the record with four wins the 11 time world champion Kelly Slater arguably the greatest surfer that ever lived has to Jamie O’Brien who grew up right here in the front steps of pipeline has won and joining the exclusive ranks the 21 year old Australian by the name of soli Bailey which warrior though is going to rise up and claim this coveted bronze Spartan helmet trophy this year well for more on the vibe on the beach we’re gonna go down to Tina Dixon I take a look around I mean this is just a typical day out here on the Northshore such a magical place you’ve got visitors taking tons of photos kids out playing in the water guys out surfing an absolute dreamland but in just a few days this place will absolutely transform the Volcom Pipe Pro starts and all the professionals start showing up and now the much-anticipated Volcom Pipe row has begun after a long build wave forecasting in the surfers traveling from around the globe hearing those words it’s on is like music to your ears and this place goes into overdrive everyone goes into their respective positions from the commentators the judges even the spectators grab their own piece of paradise and as for the surfers well they strategically paddle out knowing they will serve pipeline the most iconic wave with only three other surfers but the competition began Thank You Tina I bet many of you did not realize what it takes to put on an event like this now we’re excited and there’s really nothing like the energy and excitement on the beach when the contest gets the green light when we are a go at the Volcom Pipe Pro which attracts World Tour champions as well as local island charges it’s one of the reasons that this event is so popular amongst both the competitors fans and why this year a fourth day was added this allows the local Hawaiians a chance to compete and earn precious qualifying points while they’re sitting in the lineup against the surfers that are currently on the world tour the groms the youngsters who cut their teeth surfing on the Northshore and imagine that day when they would finally perhaps have the ability to charge pipeline in front of the world now they get to live out their dreams of being one of just four surfers sitting in the iconic lineup also in the mix are the well-known veteran Hawaiians the guys who are still charging not slowing down showing that they still have what it takes guys like Kalani David and the legend Sonny Garcia along with the big wave surfers Makua Rothman Kai Lenny Ian Walsh all those guys took to their boards in the first rounds all right sir fans it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for it’s official we are on here at the 2018 Volcom Pipe rope starting off Makua Rothman is this is what waiting periods are for perfect backdoor barrels on off for today and on his backside Evansville ear Jason Shibata high and tight through a foamy inside section comes out clean Noah Mizuno getting a deep backdoor pit kaimana hot keys Hawaiian royalty quick in-and-out followed by one of the world’s greatest Waterman Kai Lenny Ola mana Elio Graham finding a gem perfect conditions all morning long stalling for a second to bride you see this perfect line a masterful read by Hank Gaskell are one of the highest single wave scores of the day a rare left at pipeline olomana telegram out after the spit followed by Aloha nappy aji local dark horse threat to take out this entire contest speaking a dark horse Luke Shepherdson a rookie threat and there you see the veteran Sonny Garcia back-to-back gems for this Hawaiian icon another rookie getting in the mix Finn McGill with the first perfect end of the day boat by Ian Walsh stalling into a pic getting just what he needs Anthony Walsh for the sole goopy footers weaving through a heavy backdoor section and Cole Rothen guy’s been doing it for the past couple of season better than anyone Noah bashing youngster on the North Shore followed by Kalani David taking the high line straight up tall in the pocket Wow was that Tina Dixon is with a North Shore legend and what a treat it is to have sunny Garcia now be part of the Volcom Pipe row you won the World Championships in the year 2000 talk about being part of this event and where the motivation comes from since the beginning of this event away when it was a trikes leave their back in the game I’ve been a great event because we happen my masters and you know most of the time it’s filled with all the CP guys and this event started for more more than local guys feel it it’s great that you know now I’m not on the CT I get to come down I get this turn it might be then and the best part about it event is it’s later in the year we get more Wes Wells misurkin and how important is this I mean they have this heat now it’s hundred and forty four competitors instead of 112 and most of those guys are Hawaiians I think it’s great for the W cell you have this heat you know have an extra round 4 all the way continuously every single year it’s the same thing like I feel like they they’re not getting the events and a lot of guys are really hopeful about it I’ve always been against the whole thing in water you got to earn it it’s a nice gesture for them to have all the local guys there now and everybody’s happy it’s a win-win situation for everybody all right 48 years old and some of these guys are half your age how do you stay so competitor what are your thoughts on some of the talent now yeah I think well like for me I’m just having fun so I’m not stressing like the guys I don’t need to make I don’t need to do well for me I’m just in my backyard it’s just another free surf with less guys Thank You Tina incredible perspective from the outspoken legend Sonny Garcia plenty more early round action featuring deep barrels from pipeline and back door when we return to the North Shore of Oahu you’re watching the Red Bull Signature Series Volcom Pipe pro a part of the Red Bull Signature Series has been brought to you by north of nightfall now available at north of nightfall calm and by baulkham true to this welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series I am your host Sal Masekela and this is the Volcom Pipe pro surfing pipeline is a feat just within itself positioning yourself in a lineup of what can be dozens of surfers all jockeying for position and a small takeoff window on a wave that will crash over a shallow reef all in the hopes of getting a perfect bail now add in the fact that your father your uncle or your brother is pipeline royalty when you come from a lineage of pipe masters there surfing this infamous break add more pressure or can it possibly be an advantage either way regardless of your DNA you still need to prove yourself even if the world’s most iconic wave is your destiny pipes definitely a special wave it’s definitely not a perfect easy wave either there’s there’s really beautiful photos you’ll see in everything but it’s really death-defying another thing about it is it doesn’t get really good that often so it’s really cool when you get those opportunities in an event to get good waves I think there’s definitely an advantage and a disadvantage like with everybody coming here you have a lot of pressure to do good but the advantages are just growing up here and surfing it a lot it’s really cool to have my uncle and my dad like that kind of like set up a path for us they’ve taught me at the bad and the good you know and traveling just all the little things you can name a lot of our dads are really good friends and we ended up being really good friends like there’s Uncle Mike ho and Derick oh and Kaimana hachiya-san kai po halkias all our dads knew each other and now all of us are surfing together and it’s pretty cool I feel like everybody like knows knows us by like a pack you know just cool to grow up with so many different waves and so many like opportunities to do good things and surfing and other things and we got a really cool school right across the street and overall if you’re surfer and you’re a kid you’re stoked to be there now all the family legacy runs very deep here at pipeline and so much of it began with those early pipe specialists some of them becoming world champions winning major events and really paving the path for future generations well those future generations are now here many of them competing in the Volcom Pipe Pro at this event take for example Mason Howe always an entertaining surfer Makua Chi and koa Rothman always charging out there in Makai MacNamara he’s already shown us determination beyond his years and now young no abyssion will be competing you know I could go on and on but the fact is even though the fathers introduced surfing to these young sons shared their passion they have already proven their talent and hard work on their own and have become pipe specialists in their own manner Thank You Tina legacy is a beautiful thing let’s take a look at how these youngsters got on in round three as the day it rolled on you could see the waves just getting better and better starting off with John Mayall from Santa Cruz California a small score but a big wave well done for John mell a junior surfer getting into the Volcom Pipe row then it was Mason Howe basically considered the most entertaining surfer on the planet because of surfing like that a true backdoor spectacle unfolding right in front of our eyes Mason ho to clean exit Makai McNamara finding a bomb pumping up under the lip gets back on the open face with a clean getaway wasn’t all glory a couple mean wipeouts for young at Makai mcnamara including this side slip into oblivion Carr Rothman known as one of the better surfers at pipeline grabs his rail and takes it to backdoor that is going to be a huge score for Col Rodman rothman finding gems both ways and there are a lot of locals in this event but only one can really call pipeline his backyard Jamie O’Brien literally lives up 50 yards away from these barrels he’s getting and with a solid wave at backdoor Jamie O’Brien makes it through another heat this guy is a deadly threat when it comes to the Volcom Pipe Pro always fun to watch Jamie O’Brien play a home game at pipeline when we come back the 2017 Volcom Pipe Pro champion Australian so Lee Bailey can he make a return to the podium in 2018 we’re gonna find out here on the Red Bull Signature Series from the North Shore of Oahu welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series I’m your host Sal Masekela and this is the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro from the North Shore of Oahu a very finite and elite class of individuals have won this event over its eight-year history and hoisted that Spartan warrior helmet trophy more on this exclusive group of champions we’re gonna check in with Tina Dixon well this might be the most impressive trophy I have ever seen take a look at this it’s also probably the heaviest it’s called the Warriors helmet and it’s what the winners will take if they battle through all the way to the end here at pipeline take this home and proudly display it but if you are a numbers person they’re not necessarily in your favor less than a 1% chance to win this event in fact in its nearly decade-long history there’s only been four winners two of them world champions but last year so Lee Bailey came in he was the underdog but proved that any of these pipe specialists can win here at the Volcom Pipe Pro and take home one of these ladies and gentlemen welcome to the 2017 Volcom Pipe Pro final this way for me is such a special place it’s a privilege to be able to serve her with three other people so to paddle out there in any heat and just make it and get to do it again that was pretty much the whole goal of the coming over here to do this event slowly barely pulling in deep coming out clean and bashing the oncoming section here’s a right now and it’s Sully Bailey off the bottom stalling just hoping this one gives him a bit of shelter it does good little nugget it’s hard to describe the feeling and finding myself in the final it did come as a shock I think it’s hard because it was probably kind of empty at one point it was like wow did this just happen late drop on the corner of that one snaps stalls travels in the barrel still going and he’s coming out backdoor barrel comes out not done one more time comes out again ho soli he’s not Samoan Bailey with the two-for-one special for 2017 Volcom Pipe pro champion so Lee Bailey from Australia once it happened it was so surreal it’s one of those things you look back at and go wow that’s an incredible feeling to win something of such substantial like mass you know like it’s a massive event for a so far and talk about a week and a half to two really stinky and I think it’s just an amazing moment that’s a shot Canso lee bailey defy the 1% odds and raised that trophy again or has he inspired another up-and-comer like himself to steal the crown rounds 4 & 5 saw the rise and fall as usual of many contenders for the 2018 title Sun comes up pipeline awakens and it is absolutely pumping some of our competitors getting caught off-guard by a massive set to start the day but just like last year so lee Bailey starts it off with a gem at pipeline oh man you know as some of the biggest heaviest and scariest 5 I’ve ever saw it was just a matter of surviving out there getting through it and just trying to find a good one as well back at it a rich Arab rule takes a heavy wipeout right behind him camera Richards threading the needle can he come out he does cam Richards with the perfect-10 followed by one of the world’s best tube writers Jack Robinson threading the needle on the foam ball Jack Robinson with a stellar exit on a backdoor beast things are escalating here at Mason ho go some low road to Jairo to over the falls have you wipeout for Mason ho this thing’s continued on koa Smith powerful goofy footer a perfect read at pipeline nice drop wallet turn KOA Smith straight back into the lid follows a tube ride with three turns on the frontside air Joe on guru a WCT competitor competing here at pipeline sky is no stranger to perfect barrels cam Richards again this kid is on fire follows up a backdoor perfect 10 with an eight point one zero at pipeline proper having the heat of his life a watch out here goes Joshua Moniz Moniz disappears reappears a 7.5 for the young Hawaiian 2017 Volcom Pipe Pro champion so lee Bailey pulling up high and tight gets eaten by pipeline Alvaro maalik Partida threads it again for a 7 point ride coming out after the spit the Costa Rican dream Carlos muñoz put a Vita from the outside all the way through to the inside with a clean exit showing style points hand behind his back and always a threat to take out this contest Marco TRG perfectly done comes out with a blast of spit for a 9.5 a well-earned claim there and watch out Wesley Dantas this resilient heavyweight now Jamie O’Brien doing what he does best drives the rail straight in the pit at pipeline J OB drops in 8.8 three and falls it up with a backdoor beauty Jamie O’Brien again showing perfect form at backdoor pipeline these guys making raw and perfect pipeline looks so easy 64 heats have been completed we’re down to the final 16 surfers for the 2018 Volcom Pipe pro quarterfinals when we return here on the Red Bulls Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series I’m your host Sal Masekela from paradise at the Vulcan I Pro and the seven miles of joy that is the North Shore of a walk we began with a field of a hundred and forty four warriors surfing in four-man heats and now we find ourselves at the door the quarterfinals conditions continue to be epic and look to be that way throughout the remainder of the event translation expect plenty of tube time but what does that mean for the judges what’s the difference between an average tube and greatness let’s check in with Tina Dickson well I spoke to the judges earlier and surfing here at pipeline it’s all about getting barreled so what does that mean exactly well ideal conditions would be about eight to twelve feet with a west northwest swell now for the surfer they almost want to take off a little bit late put themselves in that really critical spot and get covered up so for you guys at home when you see the surfer disappear that is a good thing and you can also look for that wave to almost spit the surfer out and that really is your perfect tube right here at pipeline and the judges well a potential 10 scoring ride prepare yourselves surf fans we are into the quarterfinals heat number one koa Smith Evansville ear cam Richards and Noah Dean here goes no Athene in the green on a mean one at backdoored comes out cam Richards under the hook steep deep and underneat in the barrel holo coming out quarterfinals heat number team Jack Robinson or it’s Aaron Burr Joshua knees and Juwan guru in the lineup near his white from Oahu the Hawaiian Josh Moniz and he gets a barrel and comes out and this thing has started off with a bang here goes Joe on Daru double arm dragged into the barrel and out of the barrel the Frenchman Bonjour oui oui all the way through home I go when the bodysurf finish for into quarterfinal number three with a borrow mall party de Carlos muñoz fin McGill and Wesley Dantas truly an international field Alvaro late trop pulls under the hood and comes through oh and unlucky right there Alvaro he opened up with an 8 3 3 but now he’s paying pipelined that was a brutal wipeout big Wesley Dantas standing up tall and proud threading through a pipeline Brown Wesley gets a couple of pumps pulled into a barrel and comes up Tina Dixon had a chance to catch up with the 2010 champion and a man that we will see in quarterfinal heat number four Jamie O’Brien you know Volcom Pipe Pro they expanded it to 144 there’s a lot of local Hawaiians that get to compete in it just what does this event mean to you and what does this event just mean to the community this event is giant for the community I mean every kid that lives on any one of these islands in Hawaii fly over to surf this event if they get a big win here it could change their whole surfing career to me it’s it’s my life it’s my livelihood winning contests out here is part of my job and it’s what I want to do so it’s a blessing for me to be able to compete in these events and surf with three other guys out and you know it’s super cool having redbull be a big part of this competition as well yeah it’s really a dream you know waking up the surf and pipe with three guys out and yeah motion is awesome Jamie always a pleasure well thank you right on Jamie O’Brien giving us perspective from right outside his front door Thank You Tina when we return we will see Jamie here at the Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu only on the Red Bull Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series I am your host Sal Masekela this is the Volcom Pipe Pro Paradise has delivered powerful swells perfect surf pipe and back door both on fire plenty of sunshine three days of competition leading us to this point with one more heat to determine who’s gonna be in the semi-finals those two heats comprising in the final eight will lead us to the Final Four that will give us the 2018 Volkl pipe Pro champion that said let’s meet the competitors in our final quarter it is a wonderful day at pipeline Sal Masekela here with Chris Cote an international field cote marco Georgie from La Paloma Uruguay in red joaquin del Castillo from Peru Jamie O’Brien the local boy in white and Mitch Parkinson cousin to the 2012 world champion Joel Parkinson in green and with this swell decreasing its given this great setup for pipeline and back door as opposed to what’s mostly been back to her in the previous days yeah a little more opportunity surfers are definitely gonna be looking right and left looks like we could have a taker but as you see guys being extra choosy at the beginning of these games when I look at this line up here in the quarterfinals as we see red paddling Marco Georgie is one of those names who a few years ago you’d never think of this guy as being a standout and what he’s done in the last two years as we see it that open air back door he’s proven that he wasn’t a fluke that he actually has a knack for the Northshore Marco Georgie has become a perennial standout in the Triple Crown when the waves get heavy like they are here today at pipeline Marco Georgie really shines this surfer from oh da guei has definitely made a statement here on the Northshore and it continues to do so year after year so a solid start a five one seven to get things going for Marco Georgie and that is the beautiful thing about the Northshore if you come here no matter where you’re from in the world and you put in the time and gain the respect of both the locals and the waves you can be like Oh Marco Georgie having a look in green mich Parkinson so Mickey Parkinson disease none setting it up for a secondary to bride so a beautiful read there for mich Parkinson you know this is a guy that stands out in right-hand point breaks obviously growing up in Coolangatta Australia no stranger to a long right but looking very comfortable and at home here it back to our pipeline so Mitch Parkinson now on the board with a solid start Mitch taking off really deep in the critical section the judges like that he’s deep he rides that foam ball section comes seize another opportunity to get barreled and says I’m gonna take it it’s a nice little bonus here and then throws on a little bit of power carve here at the end just to put a period on it well done Mitch Parkinson yeah the judges are always looking for three words speed power and flow and if you can show those three things you’re gonna get a big score Jamie O’Brien’s scratching into this beautiful pipeline gem pure perfection the lines that this guy picks that wasn’t even what I’d call medium effort for Jamie O’Brien he makes it almost look too easy well Jamie O’Brien always displays grace under fire this is a heavy situation even for a guy that does this every single day you see the commitment the long steep drop Jamie O’Brien straight up into the tube he’s grabbing the rail now that’s function and form makes it look good and also it’s a utility kind of grab see holders board up there right under the lip there he is in the vortex he comes out with the spit which the judges love to see so Jamie O’Brien doing everything right on this way and that’s the benefit of being Jamie O’Brien and literally growing up in front of this wave day-in day-out for most of your life the ability to make it look so easy score comes through for Jamie O’Brien it’s a 7.5 so that means Jamie O’Brien will be in second place Mitch Parkinson in first there you see cam Richards in red from South Carolina Josh mone is a legend in his own right from a legendary family his father Tony Moniz his brothers and sisters all ripped getting ready for our first semi-final heat they are definitely focused and watching this line up to see what choices they’ll make when they got out here I think the easiest thing to do and be do what Jamie O’Brien does he’s been absolutely the lineup here at pipeline and back door anytime you see Jamie O’Brien in a key you’re just kind of wondering when will he strike it’s not a matter when but if look at Jamie O’Brien putting on the brakes there at that end section to maximize the tooth time and then pressing the pin drop and you see the entire crew saying yeah that’s our boy Jamie a lot of activity out the back right behind Jamie Joaquin del Castillo getting smashed Wow so that’ll be one of the hardest earn one point rides of Joaquin’s young life the Peruvian surfer got absolutely pounded as we watch a big set of the day make its way through guys scratching for the shoulder bailing their boards duck diving take a look at Jamie O’Brien here this is what you call technique as he takes literally his backside sticks it into the wave to slow down and maximize that tube time that is local knowledge all day long another shot of it overhead and you see disappears there on the foam ball that’s what the judges like yeah Jamie O’Brien with they say a carbon copy of his first scoring wave and that’s fine by us because when you do it this good this many times you know you could watch Jamie O’Brien’s surfing at pipeline all day long and never get tired of it his techniques out is absolute perfection it would be like a racecar driver that knows a particular track very knit well he knows where to turn in a manner that people who aren’t from there just don’t don’t have the same advantage that’s what Jamie O’Brien can do at pipeline as we can’t see kam Richards timing that paddle out there he’s gonna let the current pull him out in the lineup he’ll be watching from the shoulder as we watch the rest of this heat unfold just gloriously perfect pipeline who’s this having a look will be Mitch Parkinson late drop straight into a throw tipet Mitch Parkinson gets eaten I have there big section at pipeline so Mitch perks in getting a half of the Pacific Ocean right on top of his head a horrific wipeout but he grabbed his board appears to be fine so fans look a little bit concerned pipeline is getting gnarly and this is where you see commitment and technique have to come together equally on this way Mitch absolutely committed he goes to grab his rail here and isn’t able to get under the lip in time and it just goes to show you how beautiful that is a lot of these guys make it look so easy but you’re trying to avoid literally getting your head chopped off by the lip right here just squeaking in but not enough time to make the exit yeah you know he did all the hard work there sometimes this way it has a mind of its own and Mitch Parkinson reaps the unfair rewards of that sometimes pipeline wins and that’s what makes this wave one of the most challenging on the planet and if you can master it you can make a name for yourself anywhere in the world yeah and we you know like I said earlier we do see a lot of these underdogs making big names for themselves heat after heat this is Joaquin del Castillo the Peruvian no stranger to waves going in the left direction unable to make that exit I know we see Marco Georgie trying to manufacture a score that’ll be his last chance to get anything in the score line and that’s not gonna be enough for Marco Georgie pipeline is skill and luck and determination pulling into the barrel only half the battle it’s navigating your way out that is the tough part as shown by Joaquin del Castillo here gets in isn’t able to judge that last section in a manner where he can make the exit and unfortunately it’s gonna cost you points well as we expect a Jamie O’Brien showing complete control and command here at pipeline but then the unexpected the rookie Mitch Parkinson advancing through in second place Jamie O’Brien with a combined score of 16 stoked to join the final 8 in the semi finals heat number one when we come back right here on the Red Bull Signature Series you we’ll see Jamie O’Brien was getting hydrated in our next semi-final welcome back to the Volcom Pipe Pro Sal Masekela here with Chris Cote and we’re gonna introduce you to our lineup for semifinal number one all right Sal we’ve got an international super heat here with cam records from South Carolina Noah Deane from Australia Joanne guru from France and Joshua Moniz from right here on Oahu and as you can see some light rain squalls making their way through the North Shore but it takes a little bit more than rain to stop perfect pipeline from being assaulted here at the Volcom Pipe yeah when you get to the semifinals I mean this really becomes a game of who is going to draw first blood you see the swell has been hanging on and it looks like your surfer from Pawleys Island South Carolina Cam Richards pulling in for an extended tube right somehow gets the miraculous exit what a way to start the semi-finals cam Richards has been charging this entire event but Josh Mooney says hey it’s not just you man I can do this too Wow two big scores to start this semifinal it’s exactly what the fans friends and family and judges most importantly want to see it’s gonna be nice to look at these two waves and the opposing styles with Josh Moniz first on his backhand gets that rail grab feels for the wave with his opposite hand puts his hand on the wall and the real key thing here is pulling up on that rail to make that high exit DNA technique from Moniz and here’s Cam Richards on this deep one gets a nice pump sets his line and then fights his way through this barrel and you take another look at this one cam crouches gets this pump here and then watch what he has to go through here he’s feeling the wall he almost gets bucked off a couple of times and makes that exit judges are going to love both these waves another look at cam deep here from this angle you really see what kind of work he had to do to make it out of this one yeah the judge is showing their full appreciation with two scores up in that excellent range for Moniz for Kim Richards with kam Richards getting the slight edge thus far over Joshua Moniz lots of waves yet to come here as you see Jamie O’Brien studying as Wesley Dantas gets himself prepared for semifinal number two we got a lot of superstars and still a lot of rookie threats left in this field like young Wesley Dantas we just saw on screen big boy his older brother Wiggly Dantas also a fit human but if I had to put those two in the Octagon I think I’m going with Wesley good call there now we see a show on guru it’s got a clean read but just gets clipped at the end of what would have been a big score for the French surfer no guarantees when riding a barrel at pipeline you literally have to pay attention to every single second until you’re outside of the barrel yeah especially if you’re a rookie like this guy Alvaro mom preppy doc this is a surfer who is doing his homework studying up for his upcoming semi final number two the ocean has come alive here at pipeline Joshua moniece taking a look digs deep grabbing his real quick to bride doesn’t get super deep you know the judge is gonna be reacting to that thinking okay well it wasn’t the biggest wave was no long as two bride it’ll be a solid backup score but it’s not gonna get Joshua Moniz up into the excellent range but you see the technique that Moniz applied to that little wave that had some weird bends in it it shows you the potential for a big score in this heat Tina Dixon on exactly what the judges are looking for well I’ve been up in the judges tower watching how they operate and they’re constantly looking on the water seeing where the waves are coming in the direction and also specifically looking at the position of surfers we have a lot of big names in this contest but I talked to the head judge and he said I don’t even look at the names in each heat each surfer does have their own color and for the judges they only look at the color I like that so the judges they don’t see names they only see two brights and that’s exactly how it should be as it stands right now Joshua minis with an eight point five and a three one seven is in the lead watch out kam Richards it’s charging hard he’s got a nine point ride and it looks like Kim could back that up with something sizable kam Richards high speed entry Ken he’d get the exit he does kam Richards with another Houdini like exit did we mention that camera judges from South Carolina not exactly the place that you might think you’re gonna have a perfect tube riding superhuman come from but cam showing that this is the stock of the Carolina surfers look at the patience on this wave he waits he waits for it tucks in and not afraid to navigate that deep section you’ll see from this look here from the shoulder he is deep it almost gets buffed off perfect ability to be patient hold his line this is going to be a massive score if the judges agree with you there Sal an eight point eight the cinderella story continues for kam Richards he’s pulled a lot of momentum out of his earlier heats this kid is looking like a threat to win this whole contest Pauly Island South Carolina stand up kam Richards now in the lead with a combined score of 17 point eight zero incredible and that’s enough to get him into the lead as it stands now but watch out we could be seeing a split peak one surfer goes left one goes right we’re gonna follow no a deed no a deed with a beautiful bottom turn straight into the pocket finishes it off with a nice carve again not going to be a huge score when you consider the waves we’ve seen previously of kam Richards but no a Dean will now be in the conversation he’s you get a sizeable score to get himself into that advancing spine beautiful technique from Noah Dean here not the longest barrel but still critical finishes it off with a patented style turn this is gonna definitely help him get some momentum in this heat Juwan Duda on the other side of the same wave no exit too deep and he takes a little spin cycle it makes his way back out into the lineup so scores coming through there Noah Dean with a five seven three JaJuan Duru with a one point four three server from France sitting on a 1 7 3 and a 1 4 3 so not the heat that Shawn Duru necessarily wanted but he still has a little bit of time unless Josh Moniz can shut the door here we go Josh Moniz late takeoff straight into the pocket comes out after the spit the judges are gonna eat that wave up with a spoon yeah no judge is immune to the beauty of watching a surfer come out with that big explosion from the wave it is aesthetically pleasing and it also recognizes the fact that you are as deep as you could possibly be on the way you know when the spit comes out after the surfer again that shows the increased level of difficulty in the ride this was a beautiful girl for Josh Martinez and he makes that landing at the bottom of those takeoffs on his backhand look so easy look at this critical line puts his hand in the wave pulls up nice and high with the spit glory days glory days for Josh Moniz was clearly in the zone and feeling it Josh gets the score he needs to solidify his second place spot for now here goes Joe on to a room can he fight for a comeback he cannot John Duru goes down rhythm with the ocean it’s what makes an event like the Volcom Pipe Pro ruling so many heats you could be in the zone with the ocean and really feel like you have a rhythm and then you see what jawanda Roo is experiencing right now he literally is scratching his head and saying what is wrong with me right now up until now I felt that flow and when you’re out of it it’s hard to get back into it especially at pipeline as we get down to the wire potential for one more wave to be ridden it’s going to be the local Josh Moniz on his back end yet again well this will be a advancing victory lap for Josh Moniz who goes for the rodeo can’t come down with it but that was just a celebratory pull out ere advancing through with cam Richards will beat Josh Moniz who’s gonna join them in the final we will find out when we return here to the North Shore of Oahu on the Red Bull Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series we are on the legendary North Shore of Oahu Hawaii here to find out who will join kam Richards and Josh Moniz in the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro final Sal Masekela joined by Chris Cote tell him who they’ve won in heat two warriors paddling out now Wesley Dantas Alvaro ma patina Jamie O’Brien and Mitch Parkinson this is a heat with something for everyone of course we’ve got the household name of Jamie O’Brien pretty much going up against three wild card threats this is anyone’s heat in the lineup as we know expect the unexpected from here at pipeline there was a time where if you weren’t from Hawaii it was difficult to call yourself a standout at pipeline but here we have one Hawaiian and Jamie O’Brien and then a Brazilian a Peruvian and an Australian it just goes to show you how deep the playing field is at this iconic wave you see the surfers jockeying for position to start off there is a situation we like to call the priority battle to start our heats it’s uh anyone’s game to start it off and here we go Wesley Dantas is gonna kick off semifinal number two Wesley on his forehand standing tall and exiting in the crouched position just to add that little element of style as he comes out with the spit Wesley Dantas has started us off here in semifinal number two big man in Wesley Dantas light on his feet and he did some beautiful toast stepping as he made his entrance into that wave meanwhile more coming in scratching and paddling in blue Alvaro multi DDOT surfer from Peru takes the Highline but gets a little too close to that oncoming lip he gets clipped he goes down had good intentions perhaps a little bit too much enthusiasm when he hit that Highline and if your head gets in the lip well that’s what happens to you well there you see I mean that is the perfect illustration of what to do and what not to be let’s start with what not to do well like you said Chris good intention with that Highline but set his rail in time and the wave said I’m not gonna wait for you the 19 year old Wesley Dantas though nice patience with the footwork finds himself a pretty little tube not the biggest way but it’s gonna get him on the ball right here he could have gone down there nice recovery sets his line and he’s on the board a decent start for Wesley Dantas the judges throwing out a six so Wesley now showing that he wants it as things progress here in semifinal number two you can see still very threatening out here at pipeline and backdoor things have a way of switching back and forth throughout the day and if anyone can find the gem it’s this guy Jamie O’Brien paddling hard grabs his rail gets the perfect entry for a clean barrel comes out with the spit Jamie O’Brien doing it again this guy is a magician and you got a like a fired up Jamie O’Brien when you see that emotion he’s in business he’s Wesley Dantas right behind him Wesley Dodds is hunting for a backup score to add to that six yeah you know probably not as big a number as his previous way but that shows that Wesley Dantas now is showing high heat I queued knowing he needs to back up his opening score to give himself a chance for advancement Wesley Dantas again negotiating a little bit of a late drop there how he wanted something just a bit deeper but still a good way of nonetheless another look at it critical takeoff pumping through this thing he’s like come on I want to be a little deeper probably be another mid-range score and here’s Jamie O’Brien I mean the line that he took just paddling is worth extra points and you see the reward as he gets blown out of that thing look at this thing nice and deep finds that line feels for the wall and this is that part the judges loves bit first surfers second Jamie O’Brien fist four will beat in the excellent range and it’s just it’s just perfect technique he makes it look so easy but that’s what comes from years and years of this being your front yard some incredible visuals of a place we like to call the Banzai Pipeline as it stands now Wesley Dantas is in the lead with a six and at four one seven Jamey O’Brien’s last four comes through a nine one seven now for jo bhi it’s about finding that elusive back up score Jamie goes up and over Jamie O’Brien free-falling from the lip all the way to the reef to well-written waves to two exits having a look here at Dantas a little late once again and right here he literally gets punched in the head by pipeline pipeline right there just smashing Wesley Dantas we’ll keep our eye on Wesley look at this guy he is a warrior coming up grabbing his board like nothing just happened that’s power burst power and it looked like a tie in the case of Wesley Dantas versed pipeline he’s a little late on this drop Chris happy to make it and then pulls under and gets too comfortable and literally gets tackled as if he was a wide receiver blindsided in the midfield and here’s Jamie O’Brien actually choosing to eject this really puts into perspective that nine point one seven that he got earlier and how critical that drop in line were on this one he said you know what I’m not gonna make it let me get out of this safely a split-second decision making from a pipeline master in Jamie O’Brien so now you see the chess pieces start to shuffle here we see Alvaro mal partita he could have a clean run on this one at pipeline and he goes down as well so now for Alvaro to waves in a row just completely destroying any chance he has of an exit Alvaro Goes Down and he will be kicking himself because that wave was makeable he needed to find that line where he was able to get just the right pump through that barrel as deep as it was it wasn’t makeable barrel scores gonna come through just a 183 for Alvaro now we see a situation that could change everything this is Parkinson crabbing israil somehow Mitch Parkinson pulls through cleanly on an absolute beauty at pipeline right underneath Jamie O’Brien you saw Jamie O’Brien on the shoulders like all I want this Mitch Parkinson mate I’ve got priority and I’m gonna use it I gotta be in this thing crazy part here is this is Mitch Parkinson’s first wave of semifinal number two well might as well start off like you meant to be here better late than never that was that was incredible yeah that was exactly what the judges are looking for look at the late drop means showing how dangerous this wave is the perfectly executed to bride the judges all of it dropping an eight point two three for Mitch Parkinson yeah again here’s that late drop he realizes like oh I’m gonna need to get out of this early sneaks out with style now Mitch Parkington is back in this heat he was in dead last but that shows you one wave can be the difference maker so a big score coming through for Mitch Parkinson now he’s in the conversation he needs a backup he’s got an 8 to 3 to start what can he do to catch Wesley Dantas and Jamie O’Brien well Kelly Slater would say well Chris it’s really easy well you go just catch another wave easier said than done though to back up that score to keep your emotions in check and be like ok I got one more job to do here back this thing up so we could see one last look from the youngster from Coolangatta Australia this is Mitch Parkinson can he get the Hail Mary finish looking for a big score to get himself in the advancing spot Mitch Parkinson pulls up high and tight and just can’t get the exit Parkinson did he do enough only needing a minimal score to get that advancing spot he did enough to move ahead but he did not do enough to feel comfortable this wave was perfect crazy drop he holds that line he makes it out of this thing there’s no doubt in my mind he’s at least getting at a point score higher when you throw high risk like that the judges have no choice but to reward you so Mitch Parkinson does get enough and now that puts Jamie O’Brien in an interesting situation needing a minimal score to get himself back in the advancing spot Jamie O’Brien grabbing his realm pulling in quick to Brad for Jo B most likely did enough just needing a 1.01 and now we see Wesley Dodds is getting involved look at this being Wesley tantas gets spit out you can hear the cheers from the beach this guy coming back off of getting pounded on that last wave and he’s paddling back out like a madman do you think he wants to make the final who say yes yeah I love that angle right there you see hard-charging Wesley Dantas now take a look back at Leslie who is fighting for a big score again I mean he loves the drama of those late entries look at this finds his lime nice and deep on this one and gets blown out what the spitty looks to the beach and says come on this is what I’m here for but remember Jamie O’Brien just need that small score these two waves could flip this heat on its head this is where you absolutely do not want to be one of the judges Jamie just shifting gears here like a go-kart racer to try and get as deep as he could on that little wave and make his case well smart surfing right there from Jamie O’Brien doing just enough the scores come through Wesley Dantas drops a 7 to 7 Jamie O’Brien with a 4.5 now Jamie O’Brien takes the lead with Wesley Dantas in that second and advancing spot there you see team Jamie O’Brien they’re stoked Dantas is with him and they’ll join kam Richards and Josh Moniz for a final you don’t want to miss here at the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro only on the Red Bull Signature Series welcome back to what has already been a legendary Volcom Pipe Pro here from the North Shore of Oahu you are watching the Red Bull Signature Series and we are ready for the final Sal Masekela here with Chris Cote and look at this lineup Chris who would have thought cam Richard would fight his way from the early rounds all the way to the finals to meet up with Joshua Moniz Jamie O’Brien and 19-year old Wesley Dantas Salas is going to be an epic final only four people have won this event before Jamie O’Brien is one of them cam Richards and Wesley Dantas young guns happy to be here will they be able to hold up against the Hawaiians Dantas looking to answer that question looked like he had the exit and gets clipped at the top meanwhile scratching here is Jamie O’Brien on a deep one look at this guy adjusting trying to get as much to time as possible claps to the peach and says I’m here for it I want another helmet yeah Jamie O’Brien showing up Authority right there but look at that throw D massive barrel like Joshua Moniz had a shot but just pulled out the end there you saw Wesley Dantas just squeaking from under a guillotine and all the server’s are back in the lineup we have a chance to look back at what Jamie O’Brien did on his opening wave great race car drivers are known for their cornering knowing how to use their braking in a manner that makes them faster that’s what Jamie O’Brien does so well at pipeline the manner in which he uses his rail and his body in the wave makes him elite you can see it right here shifting shifting braking trying to maximize that tube time that’s why Jamie O’Brien could easily win this final there’s beauty and the subtleties of Jamie O’Brien’s approach then you see the opposite of that going for brute force Wesley Dantas trying to fight his way through this wave at pipeline loses that battle that Wesley Dantas will get right back out there and make his presence known in the lineup and so far we’ve yet to see Joshua Moniz where the other competitors thinking in this final well if you’re Josh Moniz you got to keep your composure like okay these guys are getting started early and as you see Josh unable to be in position for this one but Jamie O’Brien is makes himself small and gets a nice little barrel no surprise there that Jamie O’Brien has already jumped out into a huge lead and you see surfers right there I mean that’s the tricky part of getting yourself into position here pipeline Jamie O’Brien he doesn’t like no one else does but if you’re the rest of these three guys in the lineup you’re going to have to step up your positioning game if you want to match Jo be well look at him here right there makes himself nice and small again adjusting the rail feeling with that left hand on the wall of the wave as to where he wants to be to try and maximize this little tube that’ll probably be a mid-range score and another look there you see Jamie making those subtle adjustments that can maximize scoring power on what would usually be an average wave it really is grace under fire because he is making it look so easy but don’t look now a massive way of approaching it’s going to be Joshua Moniz in position Josh Moniz now grabbing the rail hooks under the lip and comes out with a beautiful display of tube riding the moenay’s family is going absolutely berserk on the beach that is going to be a huge score for our young Hawaiian surfer of course the entire Beach going crazy because this wave is mental we talk about subtle adjustments look at this drop able to hold that line weaving and no need to try and manufacture a score on this one this is an excellent way you had everything going against him on that wave but it was just a perfect read he’s doing a lot of work in that barrel pumping on his backside that is nearly impossible to do big big score coming for Josh Moniz with your current standings Jamie O’Brien in the lead Josh Moniz with that massive score that just dropped an 8 point 8 3 he’ll be in second place now Wesley dodge is trying to fight back drop pumping into the barrel a clean exit for Wesley Dantas he loves it goes to the air comes unstuck but the damage had been done with that tube ride most likely an above-average score from Wesley Dantas now taking it to our leaders Joshua Moniz and Jamie O’Brien he did not let getting clipped on that first wave get inside of his head instead he throws himself over the ledge on this steep drop look at this thing just setting up so around he said I’m just gonna pump my way to freedom comes out with the spit and look at that passion and fire I’m 19 years old I can’t believe I’m in the final with Jamie O’Brien Josh Moniz I want to win this thing he’s getting on the board as well with a 5 9 3 for a well-executed tube ride Wesley Dantas now in the conversation again remember this is not about advancing this is about taking the title as it stands now Jamie O’Brien hanging on to the lead Joshua monies in second place now we see Moniz again late drop finding the pit Josh Moniz comes out with the spit now backed up his opening score cam Richards having a look has to pull back the waves are getting better this final is escalating quickly first of all pipeline is like I’m here for this final I’m gonna give you all that I can look at these waves scratching and having a look here this is cam Richards long drop straight into oblivion cam Richards somehow navigating through a soupy wave when there’s a lot of foam coming up on the face it could really wreak havoc on your surfboard while cameras is not gonna get a huge score there he didn’t survive that wave which was one of the bigger waves we’ve seen of this final you’ll notice cam Richards can see that foam coming up the face of the wave and it really affects his bottom turn he doesn’t dig that railing too hard because he doesn’t want to slide out beautiful job here to just sort of ease into this thing and now cam Richards is feeling a little bit of them Josh I am in the zone moenay’s this drop was mental and you see here from the drone angle enjoying getting spat out look at how Josh on this drop manages to stay so low on his backhand that is not easy and he gets the reward for his technique that’s gonna be a great backup score for him yeah the judges have spoken Kim Richards with a 4 to 7 Josh Moniz with a solid backup a 697 now we’ve got a split peak with Wesley Dantas going left Wesley quick in and out Kim Richards was on the right now kam Richards has something to celebrate as it looked like he just escaped a guillotine standing show Ken Richards in fourth Wesley Dantas in third Jamie O’Brien in second now Joshua Moniz gets into the lead on the strength of his backup score a little split pea soup for Dantas and Richards on this roadie backdoor wave as he says ok I would like to just exit the situation in one piece and here’s Dantas on the pipe wave beautiful little wave comes out with style for miles well scores come through won’t change much Kim Richards gets a 6 5 7 Wesley Dantas with a 5 3 0 now it’s up to Jamie O’Brien stroking into what could be the wave of the day Jo be with the late drop straight into the pic Jamie O’Brien still driving down the line it’s a secondary tube and somehow manages to stay on his feet Jamie O’Brien pulling off the miracle wave at pipeline that was in sanity you can see and hear the beach everyone in the same to themselves right now like what just happened what is driving Jamie O’Brien right now because that take off by itself was crazy well Jamie hasn’t had a lot of big results in the last couple of years here at the Volcom Pipe row so this is him answering the critics Jamie O’Brien hasn’t gone anywhere all he’s done has gotten better Jo be doing exactly what he needs to do to get himself back into this final this takeoff alone look at this thing you see him chattering there pulls in on this first section the wave spits once gets himself spotted again sees an exit for the doggie door manages to not get buck look at this right here easily could have gone down throws his arm and his butt in the wave deep as can be look at him fighting on the foam ball see some more says I’ll have some more this does not get old that air drop he was disconnected before he was able to find the line look at him spat out once gets greedy says no please I’ll have some more finds his second tube sees he’s not gonna be able to make the entire thing sneaks out without getting clipped and looks at the beach and says come on this is a home game I want to win it well Jamie O’Brien with perfect surfing like that gets the perfect score a 10 coming across the board but don’t look now Josh Moniz answering back late drop straight into the pit just Muniz comes out clean the beach is going wild this is a battle literally for neighborhood pride you got Josh Moniz the young buck coming up against Jamie O’Brien who he’s grown up analyzing but this is a small little 7 mile stretch and right now Josh Mooney says I respect you older brother but I’m not going out without a fight Josh mo needs season eight six one to take over the from Jamie O’Brien was this wave enough I’m gonna say yes because this wave is absolutely mental to take off alone you saw what he needed to do to get into it that took all the skill on earth but then to hold this line look at this wave it spits once and then twice again I mean that is as beautiful as you could ask for to make the case for an excellent score it had everything the judges were looking for he needed an 8 6 1 the score comes through Josh Moniz drops in 8 7 3 and that means Joshua Moniz is your Volcom Pipe Pro champion and imagine being Jamie O’Brien you just got a 10 at pipeline I mean you feel like for sure you’ve got the win and you look behind you and here’s young Josh moniece in not yet well a heartbreaking finish for Jamie O’Brien who just dropped a perfect 10 and Josh Moniz answers back basically sealing his place in the legacy that is the moenay’s family and the legacy that is pipeline
