Top 5 Kart Racing Games

Top 5 Kart Racing Games

What if… just a hypothetical, we made a
game about a italian plumber jumping on chestnuts, collecting massive gold coins and breaking
bricks with his head… you think that would sell?? I bet it would!! And after we made a couple of those games…
we could give him a kart!! Yes!! We can make a racing game out of it! A KARt racing game!!!! And such was it that the spin-off genre kart
racing was created, through the years mario has had countless kart racing games, every
nintendo console has one! But he’s not the only one, our little red
friend here has started a trend, if you are successful with a gaming series, you make
a kart racer out of it, it’s just the natural way of things, a law of nature… Lego racers
So the first thing you expect to do in a game like this is build your own car right? Well of course you can, I didnt bother because
honestly… I couldn’t care less.. But the option is there and pretty much everything
you do in this game is in order to unlock new parts and build nicer cars! I’m going to be honest this game isn’t
that good, the controls are really awkward and stiff and I’m not going to make a lot
of friends by saying this but… it reminds me of toy story racing. Of course that game controls much better than
this but these are both kart racers where your kart doesn’t behave like you would
at first expect, in toy story you’re driving a remote controlled toy car and the controls
reflect that, in the same way this game really makes you feel like you’re driving a lego
car… and while I would compliment the developers on that, have you have played with a lego
car? They don’t exactly go where you want them
to, the same goes for this game. Pressing the stick in a certain direction
isn’t as much of a “lets go in this direction” as it is a suggestion to the game to go in
that general direction maybe if it wouldn’t be bothered too much by it. So why is it on this list? Clearly I’m not a huge fan. Well… there’s 2 main reasons. The first being nostalgia, I know this game
is not good, some even might say bad but I just can’t get myself to hate this game! The second reason is a more valid one, the
powerup system. Just like in any other kart racer there is
items for you to pick up, some are attacks, some are road hassard, some give you a boost,
you get the general idea. Every item is recognizable through the color
of the brick you pick up, that by itself is already different and creates a different
playstyle but there’s also these white bricks, collecting them will allow you to get more
powerful versions of these items, collecting 3 will give you the absolute most powerful
version, in the case of the boost you actually warp through space and skip about half a lap…
yeah that’s broken.. Diddy Kong racing
Another game that doesn’t control all that well, nowhere near as bad as lego racers mind
you, but still a little awkward. I feel like we need to give these games a
little break though, they were made all the way back in the N64 era that’s over 20 years
ago! These games might be older than some people
watching this video! Anyway, as far as controls go this game is
quite a step up from lego racers, it does however have a similar items system, Items
are collected through balloons, not random ones like you’re used to in kart racing
but colored ones, every color has its own power up so you know what you’ll get. This again, makes the strategy of which item
to get more interesting because when you’re in first you’ll want more boosts and road
hassard and less weapons while in 2nd or 3rd place for instance you probably want some
weapons to shoot. This game also comes with an upgrade system. Unlike in lego racers though there’s no
“upgrade bloon”. No,. in order to upgrade your item you’ll
need to collect multiple balloons of the same color, going from a level 1, 2 and finally
level 3 item. Taking another color balloon will reset the
level of your item so this is definitely a more difficult system to work with than lego
racers but I think that’s a good thing, lego racers is a little unbalanced in it’s
powerup system whereas this game actually gets a really good balance, not just in the
system but also in how powerful the items are. But that’s not all, you might think racing
in little mini karts is fun, which it is but how about we add hovercrafts for on the water
or maybe even airplanes for some flying tracks! This helps with varaiety a lot and makes it
so the game pretty much never really feels like it’s getting stale, i dont get why
thi isn’t something that got picked up by more games… Crash team racing
Drifting! No really that’s the main reason i love
this game so much! The drift system in this game is perfect,
they even give your his little drift meter on the bottom of your screen. Instead of signaling you with something like
sparks as they do in mario kart you have a meter showing you how full your drift is. You can also combo your drifts to up to 3
times before you have to let go of the drift button to make sure you can’t spam it, there
is a certain level of skill involved with it. If you manage to master the drifting in this
game you can easily drift on straight roads too making sure you leave any other racer
FAR behind you! Well they would be far behind if the AI wasn’t
so rubberband. Don’t get me wrong I don’t even mean rubberbanding
as a bad thing! If you’re good at the game it’ll still
be somewhat challenging while if you’re bad at the game you still have a decent chance
of winning a race! The balance ion rubberbanding is something
important in a single player racing game and this game gets it right! You don’t really feel the rubberband AI
too much until you start to pay attention to it.. Well unless you’re racing against a boss,
those guys are NOT balanced, but that’s what makes them a challenge and worthy of
being a bossfight.. Or boss race?? The character roster isn’t too huge but
every character has a counterpart with the same stats. There’s crash and cortex, the balanced characters,
coco and n.gin for acceleration, pura and polar for handling and drifting, making these
pretty much the best ones to use since drifting is so good in this game and then dingodile
and tiny which focus on speed. That’s just in the main story though, there’s
a lot of unlockable characters which can’t be used in the story mode and are pretty much
restricted to multiplayer, which is where you want to have a good amount of characters
anyway. These characters include all the bosses you
faced in the game, N.tropy for beating the time trials, penta penguin which is actually
the best character in the game and fake crash… which.. Just don’t… Mario kart 8
I mean of course it’s on here and of course it’s high up on the list. This series of games has pretty much created
the genre of kart racers and the latest version of this formula.. At least at the time of recording this is
mario kart 8 deluxe which is pretty goddamn perfect! It takes the usual charm and colorful level
design mario kart is so good at, mixes it with the basic feeling and handling it always
does so well and then adds transforming cars, parts where you glide through the air, drive
underwater and it all looks so goddamn pretty! You can now also hold 2 items at the same
time changing up strategies for when to use your item ever so slightly. Just like any mario kart game it does this
for a set of new tracks but also for a set of tracks from older mario kart games and
remasters them, even adding the new glider and gravity mechanics to the game making them
very different from the original version yet still familiar to play. The most interesting part about this game
though is some racers aren’t laps around, in some cases a race is just from a starting
point to a finishpoint and the “laps” you make are more like checkpoint along the
track. This is something more games should do in
the future for sure, I get it, it’s a lot more work since you have to literally make
3 times as much road and fill it with art direction and everything but these racers
are so fun to play and so pretty to look at!! Sonic and sega all stars transformed
Well yeah, I absolutely LOVE this game! It doesn’t really have anything resembling
a story mode.. Not a good one at least but hey we’re here
to race, not watch a movie so that’s fine by me! And racing… BOY does this game do that well!! To start off, the game just feels fast! Things like crash team racing for instance
can get pretty fast but it never really FEELS fast where this game fells fast all the time. It almost feels like a normal racing game
rather than a kart racer in that way. But don’t worry this game is a kart racing
for sure, even though almost everybody is in regular cars… The reason this game feels so fast is, well…
because it is.. All kidding aside though, this game throws
opportunities for you to boost around every corner, of course literally with drifting
but unlike crash team racing, this game isn’t based as much on drifting, there’s your
standard drift level system giving you better boosts for longer drifts but the real interesting
part start when you do jump into the air, these tracks are filled with ramps and drops
and while in midair you can perform trick which will give you a nice boost when you
land again, and just like drifting you can stack these so if you manage to do 2 or even
3 tricks before you land you’ll get a massive turbo boost. That’s not where my praise for this game
stops though, a sonic racing game seems a little counterintuitive since sonic can run
faster than any car.. But can he swim? Or fly even? I don’t think he can! In this game you car transforms into a boat
or airplane when needed giving the tracks even more variety. Taking about which, pretty much every lap
in any 3 lap course is different. For instance, after the first lap a piece
of road gets destroyed and you have to take another route, maybe you jump down into the
river below or maybe you fly over the broken piece of road. The game does this all while looking very
pretty! When making a racing game it’s rather easy
to skip on the details in the environment since the player will be speeding past most
of it anyway but this game crafts worlds so alive it’s actually a little scary how much
work is put into them. The changing laps never feel forced since
they are caused by parts of these worlds themselves! I could go on for a long time about how good
this game is, from controls to level design and character roster, it all just comes together
in my favorite kart racing game to this day! Thank for watching this video! This is actually a video i put a lot of work
into so I hope you guys enjoyed! If you did don’t forget to leave a like
and subscribe! While you’re down there you might as well
let me know what your favorite kart racing game is in the comments!! Until the next time, bye!!
