Student Sporting Stories | Climbing with Theo

Oh Hey! I’m Théo. I’m a PhD student at the school of Mathematical sciences. And I’ve had a membership for three and a half years. I’ve been climbing for 5 years now, and I was really happy to see that in the sports centre they had a climbing wall. Because that means that I was able to continue doing my sport here. And yeah…also, when I moved to Nottingham to start my PhD, I didn’t really know anyone. So it was a great way for me to meet people in a fun way. Just by climbing with them. What I mostly like about this school is mostly the atmosphere because it’s super friendly and chilled. And… the level doesn’t really matter because you always find something to have fun on basically. And they run a lot of session for beginners for example, to teach you the different techniques in climbing. And also some other sessions like the Learn to Move, where get better, when you move from a beginner to a intermediate level. Since I’ve been climbing for a bit of time now, I’m at a higher level let’s say at the wall. But I still enjoy climbing with beginners because I also learn a lot by climbing with them. Like I have to think about my technique in order for them to understand how to move and everything. So I always learn something new by climbing with beginners as well. I was able to participate in the Engage session that was run by the wall, and I really enjoyed that, because it’s just a great way also for me to learn stuff while teaching climbing to others. It’s just a fun way of getting better at a lot of different abilities. So for example, physically before climbing I was a bit overweight and I couldn’t even do a pull-up or something. But then just by having fun on the boulder wall, then I started to get stronger. It’s also like mentally. As I student, I could easily get stuck on a problem with my studies and then going to the wall it would really help think about something else just by being focused on the boulder wall or the routes and I would completely forget my studies for 1 or 2 hours. And then I could come back to it, with a fresh mind. I would suggest to come in, try this wall at David Ross. We would be happy to help and climb with you. It’s actually the main reason why I have the membership. I often go to the gym but… yeah to me it’s not as fun as actual climbing. So yeah, I hope to see you here at the David Ross Sports Centre and here at the climbing wall. Bye guys!
