PTVSports Report: Laney Eagles Flag Football Summer 2017

SPEAKER: [INAUDIBLE]? JOHN BEAM: Yeah, there we go. So what we’ve done is we’ve
partnered with Next Level Football to bring a
free flag football program to the kids in
Oakland, here at Laney college. And we start with
kindergarten to eighth grade. And it’s awesome. We’ve got about 220 kids
here right now, first try. And we’re teaching skills. But more importantly, we’re
having fun on a Saturday. TANIA MITCHELL: It’s
important that, you know, just to be active and stay healthy. This is amazing. I think it will be
great for people to get their kids
involved and give them something to do positive
in a community in Oakland. It’s amazing. JOHN BEAM: Now the part that
we love– or I should say, I love– is that I have our
players at Laney College. They are giving their time. And so we’ve got 14
Laney football players here every Saturday,
from 9:00 AM to 1 o’clock to give back to the community,
and give back with something they love, right? They love football, and
they get to share it with the next generation. BRYCE GRANDERSON: Laney
College definitely has a lot more to offer
than just about football. So he wants to make sure that
we’re getting our education. We’re getting things
handled in the classroom. We’re getting things handled
as being a better young man as we grow up. But it’s fun. It’s a lot of fun, you
know what I’m saying, just to be able to come out here
and give back to the community. JOHN BEAM: You know,
football is a venue. It’s an avenue to get
to certain things. But really being a part of
your community is what counts. You know, I’ve been doing
this in Oakland for 35, 36 years now. I’ve been coaching
from Skyline and Laney and being a part of
this great community. And so this is family. TANIA MITCHELL: So this is
my kids’ first time playing flag football. They really enjoy it. They love interacting with other
kids, being a part of the team. They love it. JOHN BEAM: And it’s all right
here, and it’s around Laney. And we wanted to
keep it that way, with the support of the
college, the Peralta District, to bring everybody here. And that’s what’s so important
here at Laney– everybody’s got an opportunity to be great. [MUSIC PLAYING]
