ORANGE & BLUE: Football – Paul Hornung Award

ORANGE & BLUE: Football – Paul Hornung Award

It is the Origin Blue Report
presented by UBA Health and today we come to you
from Louisville, Kentucky. It is the home of
the Hornung Award. Now why is the Hornung Award
relevant to Virginia fans? Well, one of Virginia’s
best players, Joe Reed, is one of the candidates
for this award this season, because this
recognizes all purpose backs and some of the
best college football players in America. Right now I’m joined
by Justin Gilmore. He heads up social media
for the Hornung Award. We are coming from Paul
Hornung’s office here. Now, before we go
any further here, tell folks why this award
is for Paul Hornung. He’s a legendary football
player, of course, with the Packers and the
Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, but he did a little more
than just run the football. He was all over the
place, wasn’t he? – Yeah. Paul, a super special athlete. As you all know, he’s a Hall of
Famer, both collegiate and pro. He kicked the ball, through
the ball, ran the ball. Paul did it all. So tell us a little bit about
how this award is doled out in terms of who votes on it
and what they’re looking for. So it goes to the nation’s most
versatile collegiate football player, you know, in the FBS. The fan votes count
as 1/18 of the vote, so there’s a committee
that votes on it. The eyes in the sky don’t lie. So if he’s using so
many different areas in the game where the
special teams, offense, defense, if he’s putting
up numbers, or doing some spectacular things,
then, you know, he’ll earn it. So this game that we’ll be
watching between Virginia and Louisville actually features
two guys that could potentially be up for this award. We talked about Joe
Reed but Hassan Hall for Louisville is
another guy who’s been– he’s returned one for a
touchdown already this season and a guy who can carry the
rock a little bit himself. Is that kind of fun to have
two guys in your back yard here in Louisville that
are up for this thing? Yeah. 100%. Hassan had a great return
not too long ago too. He’s probably averaging
about 30 plus per return on kick returns. Doing out the backfield,
catching the ball, running the ball, so yes,
should be an exciting game. It’s also homecoming, so I’m
sure it’ll be really intense. And I’m looking forward
to see what those guys do. All right, so if fans
want to vote on this, how did they get
involved in the process? – PaulHornungAward.com. All right, fans,
you heard it here. So make sure you
get Joe Reed who can take a little
bit that hardware home on behalf of the ‘Hoos.
