(upbeat music) (upbeat rock music) ♪ Hey ♪ ♪ Yeah, yeah ♪ ♪ Hey ♪ ♪ Uh-huh ♪ ♪ Oye, oye, oh, oh ♪ – [Rusty] All right, everybody. It’s Rusty from Pickleball Channel again, for our final medal match of the day. I’m joined by, say hello. – [Chad] Chad Edwards. – [Rusty] Allow you to introduce yourself. There you go. (laughs) It’s been a long day. We’ve had some issues, and we’re watching the
19 Plus Bronze Match. Some of you asked about what
happened to the early match. Irina Tereschenko and
Marcin Rozpedski forfeited, ’cause Irina’s arm or
elbow was bothering her. She wants to save herself and heal up for the pro matches later in the week. So we’re able to bring you
this 19 plus gold match, which starts off with
some heated interplay. – [Chad] Another big two-handed backhand. Megan’s got some semi-pro
tennis experience in college. – [Rusty] Originally from South Africa, now living out in Charlottesville. DJ, in a friendly way, said, “Well, I’m not as good as she was,” but he did grow up playing tennis as well. So we have a number of
tennis players here. Jumps across the corner. (crowd cheering) Handled by Zane. Gets it back over. – [Chad] Actually,
Kassandra’s the only one on the court that doesn’t
have a tennis background. She’s got a volleyball
and basketball background. (tennis ball whacking) – [Rusty] This is somebody’s asking. Sorry, we’ll introduce. Big overhead by Zane. Boom, right up into the media table! – [Rusty] I kicked it back. I got the hand-eyed foot kick. Can’t even see where that is, and he’s kicking the ball under the table. (laughing) So yes, Rusty House
from Pickleball Channel with Chad Edwards, and we’re excited to be
bringing you coverage. Chad and Simone Jardim, who you might know from Pickleball. A husband and wife dynamic duo who have become full-time Pickleball

(crowd clapping) – [Chad] Yeah, nice hands by Megan there, but one of the line judges
went down here in front of us. Zane was quick to jump on- – [Chad] Jumped up and
took a backhand volley out of the air. – [Rusty] Yeah, yeah just quick. You’re gonna see him move extremely well. – [Chad] Good return
by Megan, nice switch. DJ does the soft game. Megan looks to go cross-court with a dink, short hits the net. So it’s coming to
Kassandra Gehrke playing. – [Referee] 5-1-2. – [Rusty] The score is 5-1-2. – [Referee] Point. – [Chad] Gonna go with
a timeout right here. – [Referee] Timeout. – All right.
– 6-1-2. – We got a quick timeout to

little bit of that newness to the sport as far as having an eye-formation,
almost, for tennis. – [Rusty] Oh, Zane gets– – [Chad] Oh, almost there!
(crowd shouting) – Almost.
– I’ll tell you, Zane can cover a court. – [Rusty] Yeah right. I wonder what his singles game looks like. – [Chad] He did pretty
well on Sunday as well. He knocked a couple of people out. – [Rusty] Here we are, 2-6-1, DJ returns, comes across, Zane brings it back to DJ, comes up to the net, a
little flip, catches Megan, and we’re going to second server. Yeah, thank you for the
correction Rayjan, Gehrke, Kassandra Gehrke, so
I can say it properly. (tennis ball whacking) Hey, you know I gotta get the names right. I’m listening to the Facebook audience. – [Chad] I know, and last game, you were calling it
Jessica so now. (laughs) – [Rusty] Jessica instead of Kassandra. – [Chad] You messed up the first name, you may as well mess up the last name. – [Rayjan] At least he’s
getting some exposure fixing her name. – [Rusty] Yeah, there you go, so. Hey isn’t she fantastic? (chuckling) A little bit of a mishit there by Megan. You get a point. We’re coming back to Zane
Navratil who’s serving. The score is 7-2-1. (tennis ball whacking) – [Referee] Point! – [Rusty] A shout-out from Revell Rivadi. Thank you for watching Revel, and thanks for what you do in refereeing. – A little too wide. – [Rusty] We got some Navratil family. So I’m glad that the

Zane there, keeps in play. Fist pump by Kassandra,
going to second server. – [Referee] 2-9-2. – [Rusty] Now we got a score, 2-9-2. – [Chad] And so there, a heavy
slash return there by Zane, got caught in the window
a little bit as well. – [Rusty] Yeah, it ended
up going just short enough that he couldn’t get it. DJ, as you said, also
some tennis background, originally from Spain, now
lives in Miracosta, California. Tried to take pace off,
Zane gets the ball, Kassandra handles it, back
to Zane, making crosses. Just hits the net!

– 0-1-2. – [Rusty] 0-1-2. (tennis ball whacking) – No!
– No! – [Referee] Timeout. – [Rusty] Good core communication, Kassandra’s yelling no, Zane let’s it go. – 1-0-1.
– That rhymes, but (Chad laughs) either way it worked. I’m glad I’m making you laugh a lot. – [Chad] You are, you are, it’s been fun. (crowd cheering) Yeah, the advantage that some of these tennis players have, they are used to that quickness, especially if they played doubles, so transitioning into pickle ball. Those quick volley exchanges,
the short compact swing, it’s hard to,
– 1-0-2. – To get out of that quick
volley confrontation sometimes. (tennis ball whacking) – [Referee] Point! – [Chad] Little bit of miscommunication between DJ and Megan right there as to who is going to take that ball. Zane’s topspin forehand falling in the back of the court. – [Rusty] 2-0-2. – [Chad] And no point there. – [Referee] 3-0-2. – [Rusty] We’re at 3-0-2. (tennis ball whacking) Nice hands. Big overhead.
(crowd cheering) All right, ball bounced out of play. I think the ball may have
rolled underneath the stands, so they’re looking to find that. So we’re gonna be replacing
the ball, getting a new ball. When that happens, typically
sometimes the players wanna check that ball. Zane has a chance to check the ball, he hands it back to the other team. And so here we are. – 0-3-1.
– 0-3-1. – [Rusty] Megan serves, Kassandra returns, ball hits the tape, and they get a point so
they’re on the board now. The last game, if you missed it, was actually a bit one-sided
11-2, now we’re at 1-3. This, turn Megan comes up,
gets the ball over the net, reaches, goes cross-court, Zane sees it, anticipates and hits it, boom! – [Chad] Quick. It’s quick, happens. I mean that happened
before Megan even realized that Zane was coming across right there. – [Rusty] Yeah, as she
was going to hit it, he started to jump across. He has great anticipation – [Chad] Yeah, and not only
does the quickness come down to it but the timing, if you can time it when your
opponent’s head is down, looking for the ball they
can’t see where you are. – [Rusty] Holy cow, everybody. Big gust of wind. We lost some stuff here. We’re underneath a shelter on the court, and then something went
flying behind our heads. So the score is 3-3-2. Already a different
game than the last one. (player grunting) – Oh, nice one.
– Oh! Looks to go cross-court a lot. Zane barely got his paddle on it, and then it came down, dropped behind him. [Chad] Yeah, just nicked his
paddle, wasn’t able to quite– I think he might’ve
jumped early for that one. He was getting it on the way down. (tennis ball whacking) Nice forehand there by DJ. Just a little big. – [Rusty] Yeah, so he’s
hitting some strong forehand ground strokes from the back,
the wind is at his back. So that last one sailed a bit long. (tennis ball whacking) Ugh, almost. – [Audience Member] Wooh!
(crowd clapping) – [Chad] Good defense there from DJ. – [Rusty] So we have second server. – 3-4-3.
– 3-4-2. Zane serves to DJ. He returns. DJ drives it back, Megan
gets her hands on it, crosses to Kassandra, back dink. (crowd cheering) – [Chad] Oh! Kassandra actually has
an unorthodox backhand, a ball that you typically read the paddle, she actually turns the
paddle the opposite way, almost like a windshield wiper going from a forehand to a backhand and can create some spin that others can’t.
(man screaming) Good hands there by DJ. Just out of– Just, just– (laughing) Zane coming over saying that was a good shot right there, just out of Zane’s reach.
– Hopefully we got it on camera. – [Rusty] There’s actually a streak on the court where he just slid. (tennis ball whacking) – [Referee] Point! – [Woman] Wooh! (clapping) [Rusty] You got it there? Some of the balls keep
rolling towards the net. The intensity, you can see
the intensity on their faces. They want this. Game number one went
to Navratil and Gehrke. This match, they’re down one point. (DJ shouting) DJ getting pumped up there.
(crowd clapping) So yeah, last one was 11-2. And now we’re looking at 6-4,
advantage Charity and Young. – [Chad] It looked like DJ’s becoming a little
bit more aggressive, driving a lot of balls,
following in behind, taking it to ’em, putting
a little bit more pressure on Zane and Kassandra. (tennis ball whacking) – [Chad] Nice.
(crowd shouting) – [Rusty] And that’s where
he’s being aggressive. He’s been driving balls. You saw Zane and
Kassandra kind of stand up expecting that high-driven
ball right there, and DJ just rolled it down the line. (tennis ball whacking) (crowd lightly cheering) – [Chad] Nice finish by Cass right there. Side out, 4-7-1. (tennis ball whacking) And they see Zane come back
and be just as aggressive. Good drive, gets that ball
popped up a little bit, and he’s moving fast behind to close it. So now just still–
– 5-7-1. – [Rusty] 5-7-1. She returns it deep, he drives. DJ gets his hands on it, but it goes wide. So again, game number one. Navratil, and Gehrke
dominated pretty much, but this game’s looking different. All right, good call. Looks like they’re gonna call timeout. First time, now game two,
we’ll be back to you soon. (upbeat music) Okay, we’re back by a timeout. The score is now tied up at 7-7-1. – [Chad] The wind’s starting
to gust little bit more after that time out, ball moving around. – [Rusty] So DJ had just
kind of had a bad last shot, decided to take a time out,. And they come back to
now get that side out, hold the points there
so they stop the run. They were up. – [Referee] 7-7-1. – [Rusty] Navratil and Gehrke tied it up. So now we’re back to DJ
Young serving to Kass Gehrke, and they get another point,
so we are up to 8-7-1. Once again, for those of you joining, this is the 19 Plus Bronze Medal Match, possibly cracked a ball, DJ is going over to
check the cracked ball. We’re gonna get a replacement ball, so these 19 plus-ers,
lotta tennis backgrounds, they’re hitting that ball hard. A lot of hard drives, fast drives, and we’ll get a replacement
ball and rec play, sometimes little cracks here and there. You’re just like, “Ah
let’s just keep going,” but when you’re at the Minto US Open Pickleball Championships, and you wanna win a medal, you don’t want to have that
cracked ball to be the thing that messes you up.6 – [Chad] Yeah, absolutely, and one thing, you’re talking about the
drives and everything, one thing to notice is when
they are driving that ball, they’re following behind it, and they’re putting the pressure on it. It’s not just driving a ball
and standing from the baseline. – [Rusty] Big Overhead by Zane there! Off the ground, overhead. – [Chad] There’s a lot of power, a lot of power behind
that swing right there. – [Referee] 8-7-2. – [Rusty] The score is 8-7-2. Megan serves. DJ dinks, Zane comes across, looking for maybe that
cross-court, hits the net. Oh, and DJ can’t get to it. – [Chad] Yeah, you can see
DJ was all the way over on the same side of the court. – [Rusty] And he was there, he got up to the ball
as it came off the net, but then it bounced back up into the net, and he wasn’t able to get it. – [Referee] 7-8-1. – [Rusty] 7-8-1. This guy’s trying to turn the tables back. (Zane shouts)
(crowd cheering) There you go. I don’t know if Zane rolled his ankle. No, he looks okay. So, Charity and Young, what’s going on? What do you think’s so
different about this game? – [Chad] I think DJ has
taken over the court a little bit more. You see him pressing, you know, pushing Megan down the line, so he’s covering there as well almost forcing Zane and
Cass to hit into an area of the court that they
want them to hit into, rather than trying to move across. – [Rusty] Yeah, and
they’re gettin’ pumped up. We’re now at 9-7. This is a radically different game. (tennis ball whacking) And he looks to drive it,
but that was quite low. – [Chad] Yeah, that was a good return by Zane right there. – [Referee] 9-7-2. – [Chad] A hard sliced return. – [Rusty] 9-7-2. Does a drop across, and
then he goes back across. Zane, DJ. Goes for a lob. Megan gets her hands on it. They’re back at the baseline,
short and he gets it, over the net, hits the– And it’s back. Oh!
(crowd groaning) – [Chad] Tried to do a– It was a little inside
out, into the kitchen, flick right there and just
caught the top of the net. (crowd chattering) – [Rusty] So I think
the people who decided to stay here and watch
us, they’re pleased. There’s some good pickle
ball that’s happening here. – [Referee] 7-9-1. – [Rusty] The score is 7-9-1. Gehrke serves to Young. – [Chad] And Megan wasn’t able to get that ball down right there. Zane coming in with the big forehand, creating a lot of spin on that. It’s hard to react and get that ball back. (tennis ball whacking) – [Woman] Come on! – [Audience Member] Yeah!
(clapping) – [Referee] Point! – [Rusty] Nice quick rally exchange. We got a point, and we’re now tie game. The score is 9-9-1. – [Chad] And you notice in
those fast volley exchanges right there, the faster the hands, the more compact that Zane
and DJ have been getting. – [Rusty] Kass has been getting as well. (crowd cheering) – Point.
– Go, Kass! A big fist bump by Zane. For the first time in the game, they’ve taken the lead and at 10-9. That’s not when you want your opponent to be taking the lead. – No.
– Possible game and match point right here. (tennis ball whacking) – [Chad] Rusty’s drive,
just a little bit there. Got a second chance at it right here. 10-9-2. – [Rusty] Zane will be serving DJ. Big cloud came over, darker on the court. 10-9-2, the serve, the return, drops it. (tennis ball whacking) Goes out.
– Ah! – Oh!
– Ooh! – [Referee] Side out. – [Chad] Trying to go around the, yeah, he’s trying to go
around the poles right there, and just with how much that
ball is moving away from him. – [Referee] 9-10-1. – [Chad] Timing was off a little bit, and it ended up hitting
the bottom of the net. – [Rusty] 9-10-1. Chance for these guys to try
to make us go three games. Oh!
(crowd groaning) – [Chad] Excellent drive there by DJ, and that ball just hung up
a little too much for Megan. Overswung on it and caught the net cord. – [Rusty] Another chance, 9-10-2. DJ with the return. (all groaning) – [Chad] Nice hands by Zane. – [Woman] It’s okay, Megan, it’s okay. – [Chad] Just dabbing that ball. Let the ball hit the paddle and dropped it back over the net. – [Rusty] So they held
