(peaceful acoustic music) – I joined the Navy at the age of 17. The reason I joined was
really because of my Dad. He instilled a lot of
strong American values and American pride, too. He took us all over the world to make sure that we understood how lucky we had it to be Americans. It’s an incredible environment
to learn leadership, because you have these
people that you live with for eight months at a time, and to be able to either
follow orders or give orders when necessary, and knowing
your place in the ranks, but I think that was one of the most important things that I learned. The longest job and the
one I definitely got the most experience was
when I was stationed on board the USS Mobile Bay. I did a lot of flight-deck operations, we ran counter-piracy operations, but we would also do simpler things like vertical replenishments
where basically you gotta feed the crew. Sometimes there’d be a
helicopter seven feet over our heads and you gotta hook the clip in to send it off. It’s very similar
qualities in the military that draw me now to surgery. You know there’s the camaraderie, there’s the crazy hours, and
especially pediatric surgery somebody’s kids are always sick. Right now I’m at the
University of Florida, I’m doing an IDS Biochemistry Degree, finishing up undergraduate, and my fiance, she is applying to
residency at the same time I’m applying to medical school. I would say typical
day now, this semester, will be a mix of class and the research, com home, study, and call it a day. So now that I’ve passed the MCAT, I have a lot more free time, got time for Gator football
coming up this season, get time to teach my brother to cook, because he needs it. Dad always taught me that if you wanna get a girl out of your league, be a good cook. To the donors, thank you. I mean I can’t, I can’t thank you enough. It literally is the reason
that I am a strong candidate for medical school
because I’m able to devote all of this time to research and studying. There’s just no way that I would be able to participate in the caliber of research that I’m doing or take
the class load that I am if it wasn’t for the scholarships, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you. My name is Josh Pickering,
United States Navy, and I’m saluting you.
