Five Questions With Jackie Joyner-Kersee


[ Music ] I’m able. I can think well, be active, always be in a positive state
of mind. Also taking care of my body from the inside, as well as being able to acknowledge if something is wrong, so that I seek the necessary help to understand what is going on. At times it was very challenging because being an asthmatic, and not wanting to accept the fact that I am an asthmatic, and living in
denial, and not realizing that there are health care providers as well as support out there, and that you’re not alone. And so educating myself and being aware, but also getting out of my own way; not interfering and stopping me from making sure that I am taken care of. The most rewarding aspect of my work is seeing the success of others and others coming back and not acknowledging me, but acknowledging that they had a safe place to come to and work with people, meet people, see themselves grow, see themselves go from a doubter to a believer. It is not really a breakthrough, but I think
it’s so important to continue to have access and also inclusion. I think that is really — access and affordable and all of those. It’s not a breakthrough, but it’s a continuation of it. What I hope other people will remember about me? One, is that I was a great human being; a
person that gave of my time. Not just focused on my asset of achievements. It’s really understanding what Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the person, stands for and why I was motivated to do the things that I felt that were necessary to help others to believe in their own dream. So to me, if people are able to tap into that,the essence of me, not just the — I call it the materialistic side of winning medals
and accolades, yes, that comes along with the territory, but I think t’s what I stand for. And I always strive not just to be a great
athlete, but a great person. [ Music ]
