I’m Kirk Kincannon director of the
Fairfax County Park Authority and I get to play every day. The Fairfax County
Park Authority is celebrating 65 years of making parts count. Hey do you have a
racquetball racquet I can borrow? I’ve got a match and I left mine at home. But did you know that there are
65 fun things that you can do in our parks? Let’s take a look. Thanks a lot. Appreciate
it. Will see you in an hour. Play. One hundred and sixty-five parks
have playgrounds. For score and 7 wiffs. Eight parks have golf courses. If its mini golf, why don’t they use
marbles? At five park locations. Throw a hissy fit, get nose-to-nose with a snake. Visit all five nature centers. Get fit. Nine rec centers to visit Think your kids don’t listen? Take them to a concert. 13 amphitheaters You think your kids live like animals?
Visit Frying Pan Farm Park. Wheel out to a park Bike in any of 125 parks with biking
trails. Go Australian mate. Walk about. Checkmate. Play Chess. Rough it. With your phone and trail buddy of course. 238 parks with hiking trails Round up. Ride horses at lots of parks Why blame your parents for the way you
turned out? Think bigger. Blame your ancestors. 57 parks have historic structures. Go from an air walk. Wakefield and Lake Fairfax have skateparks. Go natural. View natural areas
and one hundred and forty parks. Learn about geese, ants and bees all at the same
time. One hundred and thirty parks have picnic tables. Watch your tot teeter. 146 places for tot lots. Worship the ground they walked on at 93 historic areas Chill. Year-round ice sports at Mount Vernon
RECenter Ice Arena. Laugh at dad’s rowing skills. Rent a boat at Lake Accotink, River
bend, Burke Lake or Lake Fairfax parks. Rough it. Camp at Burke Lake or Lake Fairfax. Play hookey. 12 parks have fishing. Don’t tell
your friends what you’re plotting. There are a dozen places for garden plots Love it! 84 places with tennis courts.
Dig and spike. 10 places for volleyball. If only I get drafted. Get a jumper on all 108 basketball courts. Let your dog take you for a run. There are nine off-leash dog parks. Get
starry-eyed about astronomy. Observatory at Turner Farm. Tea amid astonishing gardens. Green Spring Gardens. Make summer last at summer camp. Get crafty. Take a fine arts
class. Dance like nobody’s watching. Slip slide away. There’s ice skating at Mount
Vernon Recenter. Marshall up some energy for martial arts.
Express yourself. Draw or paint. Cameras are for more than selfies. Take photography class. Hey! Why not me? Aquatics for everyone. Something to
flip over and turn your life around. Try gymnastics. Tired of hearing your parents
drone on. Learn robotics. Sweet talk dad into buying ice cream for you. Some people still think a disc goes in a
computer. Silly people. Try the frisbee golf course at Burke Lake. Life
is pure joy when there are s’mores in your hand. Lots of campfires have them. Hitch ’em up and head ’em out. Hop on a wagon ride. From B to Y that’s two-year-old we have nature programs
about animals and plants. Keep your head above water. Learn about life guarding.
Finds something older than your parents. Be an archaeologist. Hit the deck hit the
water swim indoors or out. Build up your eye
muscles. Take up birdwatching. Make ’em laugh. Take up cartooning. Like doing home
repairs? Build a birdhouse. We’re just like jurassic park only with squirrels
learn about dinosaurs. Learn to love spiders, slime mold, bees pollen and everything in
your environment. Make life better for you other folks in your home County.
Volunteer in a park. This has nothing to do with keeping animals out. We have
fencing. Giggle. You’ll laugh more in a park. Try this. You should. Calm you. It will. Yoga. Ever feel like
you’re constantly moving and getting nowhere. It’s fun on a carousel. Watch
stuff get crushed then eat the results. You can at Colvin Run Mill. Make a
racket. RECenters have racquetball. Learn to care for all things and be a
good steward of your resources. Wade into nature and science programs. Smell a wildflower. wait till after the peace finish though. Turtles are just like little dinosaurs.
naturalist said nature centers can tell you all about them. It sounds like the name of
a cartoon character. Take a Zumba class. Some REC centers have drop-in group classes. Ride a train at Burke Lake Park or
resources railroaded. Clemyjontri Park. Wow, who knew there were so many fun things to do in our parks for kids of
