Chris Harris Drives Porsche 919 Tribute [PREVIEW] – /DRIVE on NBC Sports

Now people always ask me why most like
to drive hypercars: Lamborghinis, Ferraris, that kind of thing.
But what I’d really love to drive is a Porsche 919. The hybrid, lemans-winning Porsche
endurance racer with about 900 horsepower that weighs under a ton and
has a load of downforce, that has to be the ultimate driving experience. And I’m
about to drive it. But before I do I need to be briefed
about what I’m about to experience and how to handle the Porsche 919 prototype. What you need to do is speak to the man
who drives the car day in and day out, Neel Jani. He’s also charged with the 919 Evo,
and did that ludicrous lap around Spa where the footage looks speeded up. It doesn’t even look right. So I don’t even know what’s going on inside here. Talk me through this thing then, because
there’s so much technology in the car, but you have to harness it to help you.
Yeah. You have to understand the technology you have to understand the
hybrid, the electrical engine, and then use it to your benefit. Because if you don’t
quite understand it, it can actually quite quickly work against you. So
it’s it’s worth it to sit down, usually with the engineers, and have a
look at the data — as you just did before — just to understand what can you do as a
driver to use them for your benefit. So, given your racing background, did it take time to adapt to this type of car? It took two, three tests just because… but I grew up with that car to be honest, because that car was completely new, we
built it and I was there in the whole development phase, so basically we grew
together, you can say. We have the high downforce kit on there, and…
the level until you can swing the car really needs a lot, but that’s for me
a real racing car, you know? It’s you, the person, are the limit. You, the man, are the limit and not the machine. So it’s really man against machine. While, let’s say, in the GT car, the car is the limit, your tire, whatever, you know, You are stronger than the machine. [With the 919, there are] so many g-force and is so quick and you have to jump limits in your head where
you say, “It’s not possible, cannot do it,” and then, why, it has to be possible
actually. You feel like it’s possible. Then you to stay on it. Well, well done. Thank you don’t become a museum piece anytime soon. Oh, I hope not. — Cheers. Thank you. Wow! Wow, wow, wow. Oh, the boost out of the corners, with the hybrid, the electricity. It’s savage! The car feels a bit different in every corner. There’s a sense that it’s doing stuff I don’t know about. Whoa. It’s more like a spaceship than a car. Goodness me. The traction of it. And the speed it wants you to carry through the corners. I’m not even scratching the surface here. This is the spiritual successor to the 917. Absolute dominance. Just engineering deployed to crush a racing circuit. Woo hoo! The g forces are something to behold.

  1. Wow… I can't imagine any single modern car more impressive all around than that 919 at this moment. Almost as quick as an F1 but with endurance. Lucky you Chris!

  2. Saw this car at Brands Hatch in August, by the time Nick Tandy got to Paddock Hill along the pit straight it was doing over 300kph! Astonishing machine

  3. Did the car have a speed limiter? Or was he just being polite! It seems like
In the straights the car had way more to give but he was staying in a lower gear because the rpm was definitely high.

  4. …. and hes back ladies and gentlemen, testing cars which other youtubers do not have access to. Cheers to you Chris Harris

  5. Wow, what an honour to drive such a savage machine.
Faster than a Formula 1 car, enough G forces to make it feel you get punched in the face.
Neel Jani (legend) described it very well, only you are the limit in this car.

  6. I wonder how it compares to a current F1 car in terms of lap times? Slower I imagine but of course far more durable for endurance racing.

  7. Chris Drive's A Porsche's Well If He Like That's, Who Are We To Say😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😦😦😦😦😦😦😦

  8. I became a die-hard Porsche fan when I got a ride in my uncles 911SC Targa in the 80's. This is so epic! Porsche's race pedigree is second to none. Thank you.

  9. Unfortunately I feel like we are running out of racing cars as exciting as the Porsche 919. People will pay good money to look at this car in a museum in 20 years time. Does anyone seriously think anyone is going to be putting the current Formula E cars in a museums?
The WEC LMP1-H series in general, and the Porsche 919 in particular maybe represent the last great romantic epoche of motorsport.

  10. I hope we get more Chris Harris at racing events (maybe they'll actual finish one for a change), those were a lot of fun and very different from your normal car show.

  11. Yeah, this is totally amazing to watch! Chris is my favorite Car YouTuber ever, but he hasn't done his own content in way too long! Please come back and start doing your own content sir!

  12. was that your TWIN bruvver sitting beside you in the pits looking at the monitors and chatting to you, i wouldnt say your anywhere near identical, but you certainly look a like !

  13. Mr Harris sir, Off on a tangent but, I was thinking, you should’ve kept your 4.0 rs, what the ff were you thinking?

  14. Thinking about the lack of change in the car's sound during straights, is this means that the top speed was limited?

  15. It does not get ANY better than Chris Harris! He is the penultimate automotive journalist! I mean, who else has driven ALL of the baddest, the most exclusive, the most exotic, the most technologically advanced vehicles on the planet than CH? Nobody I'm aware of! The man is a legend!

  16. If reincarnation is true…..can I come back as Chris Harris? (hats off to his production crew btw…..terrific photography and sound)

  17. (2:42) Oh dear – PC alert. Surely this constitutes a microaggression of the highest order. "Man against machine". Oh the offence… (Sabine would understand…). 🙂

Awesome vid of course and what a car! Thanks for sharing guys (oops – another microaggression, what was I thinking?). Cheers from Oz – Dave

  18. What a blast… hope to see more of the actual stats of those laps… Chris Harris is my favorite driver for this type of reviews

  19. you would have to pay me to sit in that car … just sit … a photo of me in it cost even more … lol … i love speed and tech , but almost hate this car … just make it more like a tesla or normal car inside .. then have more advanced safety sh!t … lol .. cheers

  20. Whoa! A Chris Harris vid! Man oh man- Chris and Neil (best auto cameraman ever). Everything else is a shoddy knock-off.

  21. i remember when Chris drove the 918 for the first time and felt intmidated…that lasted for maybe the first 2 laps, then it was business as usual….give him a couple of laps in this thing for him to show it who's packleader..

  22. please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear! please say chris is back from top gear!

  23. The car would much faster w/a CVT. Before anyone says a word, consider this; CVT was used in and, consequently, was outlawed from, Formula 1…..

  24. I don't care what you say Chris. That Video of the Porsche Evo was sped up for that Spa lap. Even F1 cars don't look that fast going up Eau rouge. Mind bending stuff.

  25. I wonder if Chris Harris would be interested in driving people's project cars from YouTube, specifically Mazzei Formulas 4 rotor Rx7?

  26. Is it me or was Chris only allowed a short time in this ridiculous machine? I realise it must be an equally expensive bit of kit, but it seems like he's driving this at around 6/10ths? I think he needed a couple of hours to really get into his head what that damned thing is capable of. Still, awesome to see Chris back even though it seems like a clip from a couple of years ago before TG when he was briefly on NBC.

  27. Chopard finally gived to me the certainly about what i think on his Numburgring record. This car make seems old Nordsclaiffe is the human limits and not the car limit ..

  28. This is by far the most advanced motorcar in the history of the automobile. The performance/engineering is just a whole other level ALIEN!!!
