Birmingham Indoor World Championships High Jump Men & Women Part 4

I’d like to see from her it’s not starting with her long tights on because I think she uses that as a sort of okay I’m still going through the motions as opposed to saying I’m here to do business there is a realistic chance of a medal for me if I get my clearing clearances in early and then you see when she has those wobbles then she takes off the tights and I think mentally she needs to just get in there very early on from the get-go it establishes the run-up to her that I need to increase your taking ahead and agree with there Michael yeah I mean I didn’t notice until you mentioned that but if there is a mindset here and you have to go into this and remembering with this particular championship the high jumpers did not have a preliminary round so getting used to the track getting used to this new setup they didn’t have the opportunity to do that you don’t want to carry your same sort of mindset from your warm-up into competitions and there are some small things that you might not think will be so significant and that will affect your your mindset and that could very well be one of them and aunt it’s that really quickly I was thinking the same thing on my sister the way that she celebrated fair that she qualified it wasn’t really excitement it was like right I’m back in the game and that again is a really positive mindset to be in so she would not celebrating early she’s there demo ava has just knocked it off and crosses now going so let’s get back outside because that was obviously positive news in terms of a medal for for Morgan Lake Steve yes as we look at ELISA Trust of Italy a chance to equal Morgan Lake it does she’s delighted with that and so she should be that puts her equal with the bricks with the second time clearance of 193 let’s have a look at this just for me gets that’s just effort you see people they get they know how much it means to them don’t know how much they need to do and you see effort you see somebody raised again put more port in the floor and drive them in get up in the air that’s a good competitive jump that’s what you want to be seen so here’s a very capable high jumper Yuliya Levchenko second on the world lists with 197 silver medalist last summer so that Levchenko off a foul second attempt no just like that completely wrong got that completely wrong no pressure I think there’s pressure you’re in fifth you’ve won medals at the World Outdoor Championships you know you’re somebody should be in the top three it’s pressure pressure indeed as it is for Eric Cunard of the United States two fouls 233 can he handle the pressure no he can’t that’s a surprise yes I think there finishes in fourth place there and look he’s ripped his number up he knows has not done himself justice today in this competition he’s outside the most fourth little shrug there to his coach and he’s going to be disappointed with that I think but it’s tough for the Americans they had their trials two weeks ago in Albuquerque then they’ve got to fly to Britain you’ve got jet lag to deal with and the American trial system that first three across the line is a tough competition she had a really tough tough competition two weeks ago and then to come here as a game further is a difficult mindset to to deliver I think well it’s all about mindset when you come to a charity versus what so many athletes love about the competition that a championship brings it’s a different mentality to competing on the circuit as it were for banks with the women’s side of this arena here in Birmingham Demi over Aries two fouls she’s passed here maybe a little look at the next higher because she’s in sixth place she’s the only athlete at this height who’s carrying the two fouls you could argue that she may because look at the next high probably probably won’t get her into the medals I was at this height she’ll have to clear a height anyway so anyways it’s all the strategic game of high jumping Marella demo robot of Bulgaria two fouls 193 it just got too close to that leaned in and took it off on the way up on a jump it was tough for her because that that would have been a season’s best of it hasn’t jumped that high this year so that’s probably why she didn’t pass because the next height up would have been probably too big and asked for [Applause] chabela co getting ready for his 233 last chance to stay involved [Music] [Applause] he’s happy with his bronze medal there though look at him he knows he’s got a bronze he’s happy they’re looking at the card was he likely to be bar seaman and my sera Senko probably not so he’s happy to walk away with a bronze line through the middle is only lysenko and partially lefting on the men’s side and on the women’s side that was morgan late getting ready Daniel this Cinco [Applause] Levchenko watching on they are alternating side to side allowing the alternate mats to take a precedent and have the freedom to jump you don’t to be running at someone jumping that’d be a fairly unique experience I think that’s what they’re trying to avoid here yeah they’re timing it the judges are timing it from that point of view I mean normally when you’re high jumping you’re just looking at grass field behind the center or something well you’re not throwing any more so probably no but no live chenko third attempts so lift chenko is out she’s in fifth place is for at least remain and Great Britain’s Morgan Lake is one of them moot as air Sebastian one of only two men with a clean sheet so far the new height of 2 meters 36 love the way eyes it up from that right side all surprise there I think just decelerated him as it serve as you slow down into the barn you trying to use that speed to convert to go up what he’s done is by slowing down he’s not converted enough of the speed to her and he’s just dropped on the bar basically stalled why would you slow down I think you’re thinking I think you’re just slowing down maybe a little bit too close a little bit too far away now like my Senko this is like gunslingers it’s the first man to blink bar shimmers blinked let’s see how he gets on here that’s as close as you get to clear without TV one must have just given that the slightest of rappers at that point sleeve is it current as Usain Tuck Yew bestir it’s this polish that tickles look at this Oh No maybe stop stop – to think something like that but then now they’re on exactly the same record so they’re both going to be tied for that first place so then can’t a mouse on the main side Lysenko authorized neutral athletes and bass him on the women’s side Morgan Lake find herself at she is in fourth place is total fouls remember yeah that’s interesting Steve because it’s the 2001 84 well it took the only tie right yeah it’s only that opening height that may cost her the medal in the end are those that early failure that that runway really that she didn’t quite get right didn’t get the rhythm early it may cost him so get the rhythm early pass him looking to do exactly that rhythm on the approach maxi pies it did you did again totally right so he knows that you know he blinked first and then lice and coke blinked and he had a chance there and again just trying to muscle it off the ground a little bit instead of using that wonderful flow that he has so then Mario lasses Skinner two meters for she’s jumped this well within her craft 196 which isn’t a competition on her own she’s way better than anybody else been out with two meters about four or five times this year already so she is the class of the field for one authorized neutral athlete to another Lysenko 236 he knows this is a chance to possibly take gold here because he’s seen the only other athletes who can stop him pass him on to fouls the Cinco on one second attempt not as good as the first was it not as good as the first but again he’ll know he’ll know one more attempt each are we heading for a jump off well they have identical cards so far it’s not out the question two fouls at this height of 236 in a clean card right up to this height solo cinco’s and bar shim neck-and-neck one jump remaining to separate the two who’s your money on I’d hate to say not a gambling man not again look man crash Dee Cunningham of the United States a bit of pride she’s watching her title being taken there unless she can do something about it 196 first attempt too much just again slows down and stands up keep leaning lean away ride that bicycle around the corner that kind of feel and that that then she doesn’t have to rotate on the floor she rotates on the floor you limit the amount of height you can achieve and that’s counterintuitive right yes but it is it is what you’re trying to do is being the strongest position it that you can so you put your feet directly underneath your shoulders instead of the thing you should do which is put your foot ahead of you Randy coming and watching on the coaches are close here getting in the ears of their athletes so two athletes remain on the men’s side the first final award from the man they call the Prince of Qatar mousse as a Sebastian how much do you want this World Indoor title third and final jump one more attempt two meters 36 4 pass him came down on that game through fouls well he’s not out is finished in terms of he’s had three fouls so if Lysenko goes clear then bashing and not responded for Seungho knocks it off we have a jump off [Music] just rotating on the floor and backing in there but if you’d looked at his mindset the way that whole stadium went quiet for him as he meditated is in his way and then let out that rule and run gathered himself a lot of effort so then Morgan lake seasons bests already 196 first attempt unlucky there I think that if I’m right in thinking that probably would have represented a personal best indoors and outdoors yeah I think there so again 196 an early look at it but again why not she’s got to step up as an athlete now really at the eighties there she’s been to major champion this is the time when she’s got to believe it’s my time it’s my time step up and compete and this is a perfect competition she’s done it time and time again so then as we turn our attention back to the men’s side Daniel a Cinco this jump to win the competition is for a hush here you could hear a pin drop as I look around the stadium here two fouls a battle with himself massive jump from lysenko that’s a gold-medal jump he looked as good as partir me matched him and then in the end he bettered him certainly our etern the niña into a library he asked for sure I’ve never seen that and the crowd blessin were incredibly immaculately quiet you could hear his feet scraping on and it again he just composed himself that’s class that’s class look at that very competent jump and you know what a bit of needle there because that’s the man who was deprived of a gold medal last summer – mutters there Sebastian they’ve swapped places gold becomes silver silver becomes gold and lysenko as risen to the top now you may lose bolt you may lose athletes of that level but we can see some rivalries Barcia in Sanko we can see some rivalries it’s unfortunate there’s not a global Championships this year so they won’t go head-to-head in the major champions we’ve just got the Europeans in Berlin later this year but rivalries that’s the critical thing and he’s only twenty years of age the sink oh yeah and if they do high jumps a young man young ladies game they jump higher at a young age and they just keep jumping those Heights so trusting now they’re at 196 too much for her Morgan Lake still involved so the men’s final is concluded only the women’s yet to be decided in its lassen skein who’s out in front with for first time clearances Ashley Cunningham the reigning champion still involved about to take her second attempt so is Morgan Lake so then Cunningham the second chance of 196 that’s close that’s much better much better jumping there and this is athletics is that mental game now trust we’ll be looking at that thinking she’s got a comfortable bronze icesat-2 more Morgan has just got to believe in herself and take it away from her why not why not why not indeed a great time to really come of age to 20 year olds battling it out Morgan Lake well whatever happens here Morgan Lakes done better than a sixth place last year and the London Outdoor World Championships she’s guaranteed for thought better 196 this a medal potential jump second chance knocked it off of the way up just running in really well great speeds running in but in those last two steps her inside shoulder on her left shoulder she just tips it towards the barn that’s taking her in so therefore when she jumps she’s jumping slightly just drifts in do you see how she rotates that shoulder way the left shoulder and that takes it in towards the bar you have got to have the courage to stay away and then go vertical come on come on Morgan but it may be taken out of their hands because if at Lycia Trust goes clear it makes Morgan’s task even more difficult Trust carrying a foul and the first jump we see Morgan fail twice at this height of 196 trusts very capable 2 meter jumper back in 2013 indoors fifth embryo trust has a championship pedigree of sorts at least but has a chance here to confirm her bronze medal second jumper 196 just leads in with that right arm just pushes it towards the bar and really you should push it up into the air so still in third one more jump left so we’ve got three athletes on 2001 96 one who’s gone clear Mary Alice’s ski knows she’s in a class of her own right one of the three on two fouls is Morgan Lake she’s in 4th place at the moment Cunningham will get the first chance to go clear the first time of asking there’s fuzz calm coach to morgan lake striding it out the nod of approval hopefully giving morgan the confidence she needs she just needs to let go and Trust this now but first up Ashley Cunningham off to fouls her chance just came out of her arch early just came out of her Archer me so what she did is she goes back over the bar what you have to do is wait like a bicycle wheel you rotate around the bar then flick your legs out just got the timing wrong at the top of the bar right technical stuff aside this is an emotive jump from organ lake she’s almost just got a knot think about this right go for it that’s what I’m thinking I think you’re right I think this is this is about adrenaline this is about motivation you don’t make it total it’s now’s your time there’s a medal on offer you clear this I’m not sure the Italian can be I completely agree a medal chance for Great Britain’s Morgan Lake currently in fourth place off the back of a season’s best at the previous height now she’s moved to run-up back a shoe I saw her doing that earlier she’s moved it back a foot she’s further away giving herself more room if she runs that speed and stays away Morgan Lake 196 third chart over-striding there could see that deceleration I think it was that you move the run-up back to counteract what you’re doing but it all it does is make you open up and pushes the shoulder further ahead so there was such an opportunity there really to step into a medal and she’ll know she will know and for me she’s always been quite a nervous young lady you see a jump really when well when she smiles when she’s relaxed and she’s comfortable and you see a jump really well and didn’t quite see that today it’s the early failures running underneath the bar in the first attempt today before messing up the run-up second time at 84 that’s what’s coaster big confidence boost though for for Morgan Lake a fourth place possibly the most agonizing place to finish at a championships but she is out through fouls at 196 fourth place here this evening Trust is guaranteed bronze and can improve it but that’s her third foul also so the competition is over in terms of how the medals will go trust the Italian will take bronze Cunningham silver throw fouls at 196 but there’s one athletes this hugely dominus high jumper Marielle assets keener gets ready for 199 and she’s not had any foul so far as we look back to trust she’ll be pleased with the medal definitely definitely she’s not jumped anywhere near the two meters that she’s jumped career-wise but she’ll have seen the morgan lake go out there and it’s a bit of a there’s a jump that necessary do I want to improve my bronze to a silver you would hope she would but she’s going to be satisfied with that Morgan opportunity missed opportunity missed I feel but you know now’s her time at the age of 21 22 that’s when you start jumping at w height that’s when you’ve got to really cement the the 2 meter jumping so that you can jump 96 is 97 sand win medals a champ tip so you know this is this young lady who’s who’s committed herself to high jump now I think I really do think that’s the sensible way forward for a base that the National Performance Institute and love pura full-time coach everything going for you they’re unlucky so major medalist as expected Mario Lanza’s skiing of the world leader 38 consecutive victories would you believe her last victory or last defeat I should say was back in 2016 ahead of Ashley Cunningham organ-like in 4th place [Applause] and here’s the man’s result and it was a win for Daniel lysenko silver medalist last summer and bar shimmer surprised to feed there and Robbie grabbed ours disappointed I’m sure with 220 back in ninth place [Music] what will the overriding at moment
