2018 Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport review – is it a match for Audi and BMW? | What Car?


It’s safe to say that the old Vauxhall Insignia
was a bit…bland. It was a common sight on motorways and synonymous
with sales reps and company car drivers but private buyers just didn’t see it as cool,
which was a bit harsh given that it’s so frugal and well-equipped. With this brand new version then, Vauxhall
has upped the ante. To put it in line with Skoda Superb, Ford
Mondeo and pricier options from BMW and Audi and now it’s got a new name; it’s called the
Insignia Grand Sport, claiming to have even more space, even more kit and somehow cheaper
than outgoing Insignia. Is it all too good to be true? We’ll find out, starting with what it’s like
to drive…There’s a wide variety of engines to choose from with the Insignia Grand Sport,
ranging from 1.5 litre petrols to 2 litre diesels. But let’s be honest, most people are going
to go straight for the 1.6 litre diesel we’ve got today. It’s a good choice too, offering flexible
performance despite being the cheapest to run. That said, if you regularly fill all of the
seats in your car, you may wish to look at one of the more powerful engines. On standard suspension and relatively small
alloy wheels, the Insignia Grand Sport rides over most bumps well although, it will start
to fidget over rough surfaces. Adaptive dampers are optional but we’d definitely
stay away from larger alloy wheels which are likely to spoil that ride. When it comes to handling, the Insignia Grand
Sport is much better than the outgoing model; the steering feels well weighted and accurate
and road and wind noise is not too bad, you can hear the diesel engine a little bit and
the petrol engines are even quieter. Well, the interior is a big step up from the
outgoing model of Insignia and these seats come as standard even on the entry-level model,
Design and they’re supportive and comfortable…the only down-side is you have to spec mid-range
to get some lumbar support. There’s plenty of adjustment, so you can find
a comfortable driving position and once you’re there, forward visibility is excellent thanks
to these slim pillars…rear, not quite so good however if you go for tech-line or Elite,
you get parking sensors front and rear as standard or you can spec them. There’s also a reversing camera on the options
list as well. Now, our only real complaint is that, although
it’s a massive improvement, there’s still a few areas that are a bit iffy. For example, these indicator and windscreen
wiper stalks make a bit of a cheap twang, when you use them. A 7 inch touchscreen is standard on the Vauxhall
Insignia Grand Sport, however if you go for Satnav, like we’ve got in this car, you get
this 8 inch touchscreen. Overall, it’s easy-to-use and the icons are
large enough so that you can use it on the move. Plus you can connect your phone to Apple Car
Play or Android Auto. The only downside is when you’re trying to
scroll through the radio stations, it can feel a little jerky and not quite so easy-to-use. You also get Vauxhall’s OnStar service, which
has a 4G WiFi hotspot and a dedicated call centre. It can send instructions to the Satnav and
even call emergency services if you’re unfortunate enough to be involved an accident. Now though, I’m going to connect my mobile
phone and see how easy it is to set a destination in the Satnav. First of all I’m going to connect my mobile
phone…so if I click on “pair device” and go to my bluetooth, and hopefully I will find
the Vauxhall here somewhere. “Set pin”…I’m quite happy with the one it
generated. “Pairing new device”, yes, yes that matches,
ok…wow! That must be the quickest connection ever,
I am super impressed Vauxhall! Will you be as good with setting a destination
in the Satnav? Will it be just as easy? “Ok”…”destination”…”address”…let’s go
for, let’s go for Dartmouth, go and see some boats. “Dartmouth”…”Street”…”Highstreet”…or
higher street, highstreet might not even exist. Ah, there we go! “Higher Ferry”…we’ll definitely see some
boats there. Tick, “go”. Wow! Super easy. There’s plenty of space here up front and
your passenger will really feel like they can stretch their legs out, and there’s also
a lot of storage spaces, for example there’s quite a deep storage space there…and another
one there…we have cupholders here, decent size door bin and glovebox is a pretty good
size. Move to the back and it’s a bit of a mixed
bag, the seats are comfortable because they actually have a bit of lumbar support which
is a criticism of BMW and Audi’s backseats where it’s lacking and there’s plenty of legroom…although
because of the sloping roofline, taller passengers may struggle with headroom. Move to the middle seat and you’ve got to
put your feet on this big lump in the floor or either side and even for 5ft 4 me, it is
a little bit squishy! The Insignia Grand Sport’s boot is big enough
for a couple of sets of golf clubs or some holiday luggage, but most of its key rivals
offer more space. Plus while the rear seats do fold down to
increase that room more, you can’t get a variable height boot floor even as an option. One of the big things going for the Insignia
Grand Sport is its price tag, and that’s before you’ve rangled some discounts out of the dealers
and benefitted from attractive finance options…and if it’s a company car, the benefit in car
payments should be cheaper than a lot of rivals. Go for the 1.6 litre diesel engine, as most
buyers will and running costs should also be fairly cheap and team it with out recommended
design trim level and you’ll get everything you’ll need, including keyless entry and start,
air conditioning and Satnav. Every Insignia comes with automatic emergency
braking and lane keeping assistance too. The Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport is now more
appealing to company car drivers and private buyers than ever before…but there are more
luxurious and more practical rivals around. That said, if you’re looking for a well equipped,

  1. The Insignia was frugal… after the mid-life engine range change. Pretty much all Vauxhall cars had better engines from about 2013/14.

  2. There was a video featuring the designer (who's well over 6ft) and he was showing off about the space he had in the back. Has it shrunk?

  3. In 2018, this will be sold as the Holden Commodore in Australia replacing the locally made rear wheel drive. The local car, the last being the VF series, had engines of 3.0 litre in Commodore Evoke, 3.6 litre in the SV6 and Calais, or a 6.2 litre V8 in the SS.
    So this car will need to be a very good car as the VF Commodore was very good.
    The other hurdle will be the Holden faithful. Will they go for the 'Opel' Commodore, or will they take a stab at the new Kia Stinger, especially those who are seeking performance and the rear wheel drive experience.
    The Commodore Sportswagon also had over 2,000 litre of total cargo area. More than the Superb.. That is a lot of space.

    I hope the Opel/Holden Commodore does well, even if the French have bought Opel.

  9. If I were in the market for such a car, it would be the Mondeo that I would go for, followed by the Insignia. I wouldn't have an over-priced German car, not a chance especially as they are so unreliable.

  10. This is sold as a Buick in America….but we don't get the manual transmission. The automatic gets better fuel mileage. …but it would be fun to stir the gears anyway!

  11. Depreciation is the killer for private buyers. Get this car as a private buyer, in 2 years time, in high spec and it will be a steal. Leather 170 bhp diesel top spec, 45K all for £13K.

  12. The front end and grille made it more than obvious that this was also going to be the basis for the next generation  Buick Regal.  The Buick influence is unmistakable.

  16. That is a miserable car review, using all the same words, phrases, get-outs and opinion avoidances as every other miserable review. It may have been voiced by a human but was not good enough for humans.

  17. Shame you don't get our handling tune or the 3.6l V6 we get in Australia. If you like the size thank Australian engineers who demanded the larger dimensions. Pick of the litter in Australia is the Calais V Tourer , 3.6l V6 AWD. The base engine is 2l Turbo and the 2l Diesel is an option on lower versions. Oh and standard 9 speed auto on all versions.

The reality of just about ALL motor journos who work for companies that review vehicles (and publish weekly/monthly magazines) is that they daren’t be too negative and arguably try to be positive otherwise at the launch of the next vehicle from the brand they’re reviewing they simply won’t be invited back nor asked to review it. No swanky hotels. No all expenses paid bills. It’s a sickly sweet, disingenuous review (personal opinion) which exposes a few minor cracks but ultimately, a solid choice and should definitely be considered a contender in its class (again, all personal opinion & conjecture)

  22. As usual in these car reviews – no mention of how the CDTI is one of, if not the most unreliable diesel engine out there. Injectors, EGR problems. Also very weak clutches and duel mass flywheels giving up as early as 6k. Lovely looking car all the same. When they stick PSA engines it I'll concider one

  24. The new Insignia looks better aesthetically than the old one but it's less practical, and less comfortable because of the massive alloys. Opel are idiots trying to copy the BMW and Audi designs just to try and make people buy more of their cars. Stick to what works and make a good car instead.

As a previous owner of an astra and Corsa "crap" I was very impressed when I had one from enterprise for a couple of weeks, brilliant crusier on motorways, pretty fun on A roads round Snowdonia and a very good standard of workmanship all over. If I was to purchase one it would have to be the 2.0 as the 1.6td was enough but I like a little more kick.

    My kids preferred it over there mums cla220 lol, negatives include lag on the GPS and the fact the steering assistance is automatically on unless you turn it off each time the engine is started.

  26. Sitting in a US-spec Buick Regal hatchback, I am 6'2" tall and setting behind the front seat fit more me, I had adequate room in the rear seat. It wasn't extremely roomy, but it is enough, and is as good as most midsize models. Much better than the predecessor (which I own a 2015 Buick Regal).

  27. Iv currently got one of these as a courtesy car because someone crashed into my car. And I must say this is one AWFUL car!!. Ugly ugly ugly!, cheap looking interior with nasty plastics the tech inside is DATED to say the least it’s on par with German cars 10 yrs ago. The 1.5 turbo couldn’t pull your grandmother out of bed and it mated to an absolute dog shit 6 speed auto gearbox that hold revs constantly and when it does change is like a hammer to the back of your head. Mpg is terrible also at 36 mpg!!, what’s the point of having a small petrol for this??? ( my car is a 3.0 and gets 8-10 mpg more). Handles like boat stuck in a hurricane suspension far to bouncy and ZERO feed back from the steering. It is what it is a cheap car trying to keep up with competitors but it failing in every way. If you like driving and are looking at these cars then they are NOT for you, if you a person where a car is a car and not fussed you may like it. Only plus I can give it is it’s roomy inside with a decent boot. Personally i think the Ford mondeo is light years ahead of this car and that’s saying something

  28. Still looks too plain Jane, the vectra was a better looking car. The rear looks like a Renault Laguna. Original Sri with the vx kit looks better, that’s what I will be getting next.👌

  29. It's a wonderful car. I used it in my last trip to UK. Excellent car with lots of features. Boot is really big to accommodate 4 suitcases and two backpack.
