20 Questions with CPS Athletic Director Josh Hardin


hey how you doing wonderful how are you
good so hey tell us when did you know you wanted to work in education from the
start you know coach with my dad it’s in the heart always has been
what’s the best part of your job you know working with the kids you know
being at events like this and being able to impact the kids in a positive light
you are a preschool – how does that experience help you as athletics manager
for the district yeah you know I’d say the patience you know dealing with the
little ones now translates over to the student athletes coaches parents like
what’s the most challenging part of your job you know the things that are outside
of my control a little bit of a control freak so the things I can’t control very
difficult what’s happening here today wait hold on one second how we doing
guys doing good doing good I’m top top my man I’m stopped I’m done there you go
here it is buh buh love it love it wait what we seeing what’s happening here
today Wentz Mill Park oh yeah beautiful day we’ve got a field trip we’ve got 200
kids here from 10 different schools it’s a fundraiser an event with a go vibrant
they’re giving $10,000 to our new elementary athletics initiative a great
partner like so many other community partners we have in the district it’s
fantastic so what do you do all day you know it’s a lot you know really looking
at ways to impact the kids you know opportunities participation at all the
schools so growth and progress what’s your favorite sport to watch I’d say any
sport that my daughter is playing she’s at Pleasant Ridge Mountain story right
now soccer she’s going on to basketball soon what’s your favorite sport to play
perfect speaking of basketball I love it I play basketball wall Hills High School
and got a college scholarship what makes CPS a great School District as from a
former student yeah I’d say you know the foundation you know we truly build that
foundation for success what makes CPS a great school district as an employee you
know we’re really preparing students for that next level preparing students for
success and superintendent’s vision is like no other what makes a good athlete
Sadie IT discipline intensity and teamwork that’s what I tell all my
students what’s the number one thing you just don’t like to hear parents say to
their kids you know anything negative you know I always say mix the negative
promote the positive what’s the most successful way to motivate a student
athlete or team leadership leadership leadership lead by example
show them that the hard work they put in pays off what sport do you wish you
could play I’d say lacrosse you know it’s a sport
that I was always interested in popular now not so popular back when I was
growing up so is winning everything absolutely not you know it’s a it’s more
about teamwork extracurriculars coming together how many professional athletes
or Olympic athletes came through Cincinnati public school districts I’d
say a ton right now there’s a there’s gonna be more because I see a lot of
potential and a lot of our kids but Mary Weinberg Walnut Hills alum also on a
Olympic gold medalist why are sports so important for students how much time do
you have right you know physical and mental health and well-being leadership
time management playing as a team you know I could go on and on that’s a lot
where’s the best-kept secret about the Cincinnati public school athletic
department I’d say my team you know the staff underneath me they’re great they
work hard though everybody out in red shirts right now is my team they are the
kept secret out there in the district besides gardening I’d say squash it’s a
sport not too many people know about and I played over the since night squash
Academy right now I’d like to challenge you maybe some of the cps kids and staff
out to a match maybe sometime now if you can do anything else in the world what
would it be oh boy besides traveling to Hawaii nothing work with the best job
and the best district in the state thanks a lot Josh I get Mexico’s killer
